supercharger lubrification

hi,

i got a question here.. i changed my oil in my SC.. but that oil stays on one side of the SC and lubes the bearings there.. what about the other side?? does it have a plug as well? or is it using sealed bearing or something ?


coze i can understand that you need to change the oil from time to time, but the other is wearing out as well.. no?

no no , the back of the SC... how can it go to the back? i saw plans on the net of a eaton SC.. i didn't see anything about the oil going to the back..does it?

Got a bottle tonight and looked at the ingredients. Really strange stuff... why (one wonders) would they put phosphoric acid in it?? That is one ofthe ingredient of most cola drinks. It is also useful at de-calcifying your Mr. Coffee maker pot internal workings.

Looks like a good systhetic oil like Amzoil 0-30 or their 15-40 Marine Engine Oil with a 12 TBN classification? 10 to 1 they would outperfor that 4 ounce bottle of supercharger oil any day of the week.. and twice on Sunday.

i mean the impeller shaft hook up to 2 gears in front right? thats where you got that teflon coupling. thats must in oil from the way i see it..it,s where you put oil :)

BUT, the other end, where the impellers end,the must be bearings there holding the impeller shafts there...is THAT part on oil or is it on sealed bearings?

I believe out back is a dry system... bearings and what not. Thats what gives your the whine sound!

gee, they should have put a compartment there and give enough space for a another bottle on SC oil...that way everything would be lubed right.. i wouldn't have mind putting another bottle in it :)

err i don'T think synt oil has anything to do with the SC.. you can't put it in there anyway.. you have to use SC oil available at a buick/pontiac dealer

I know that GM sells a "super charger" oil, but I also know I can overclock my computer. I can tweak things in the registry and I can adjust things in the BIOS

Point is, just because it's GM don't mean it's gold (except that THEY think it is). SC oil should lubrictate bearing correct? What if there are better alternatives? What if synthetic oil does a superior job?

These are a few of my inquiries. Perhaps someone has done some research on it, and can quantify my ideas on good, bad or indifferent concerning synthetic oil. :biggrin:

If GM reccommends it, that means it works, and more often thab not, it works well. Thats not to say that and aftermarket oil may be better, but how do you intend to find out? Trial and error gets expensive...

i agree with everyone else on this, and that trail and error would be the only way to find out, but on a SC trial and error could be a expensive learning experience. different oils are thicker than others so you want a grade of oil that will be close to if not exact to the specs of the SC oil. Its close tolerances that make the differences.

Well, I did some checking on the internet and found out that the GM Super Charger oil IS synthetic. Makes sense. Synthetic oils have the widest heat range of any normal crude-oil based oil available. They have been used for years in high altitude jets because they would perform at sub-zero temps AND also work at ground level temps outside of 80-90 F without a hitch.

Makes sense they would use synthetic oil in a place that has to start our in sometimes very frigid conditions, AND also work in extreme heat conditions of combined outside air temps with the engine heat.

I looked at the ingredients on the bottle again after reading about that, and there are no "petroleum distilates" (as in refined crude oil) listed in the specs.

What sort of ingredients are listed on the bottle?

GM #12345982 Super Charger oil ingredients are:

Fatty Acids, C5-10, esters with dipentaerythritol-Phosphoric acid, (1,1-dimethylylethy)phenyl diphenyl ester.

I double checked the spelling twice before posting. This is the ingredients listed on the bottle, verbatim.

Saw at another website referrence to the "synthetic" super charger oil made by GM.
