The Test Drive...

Well... Went and looked at the VR-4. Need some input here.

The car is beautiful... Immaculate condition cosmetic wise. But when I cranked her up, the Throw off bearing was squeeking a little bit. Also the valves were ticking slightly.

The present owner took very good care of it... He had to replace the front right drive axle because it got bent on a curb, he said he had to send the parts out to get machined because Mitsubishi wouldnt sell him just those parts.

The car has 164,000 miles... When will the turbos need replacing? Or when should they have been?

So heres another question... How much could I resell the thing for?

Thanks,

-Wes

sounds like it needs some work! I suggest you take it to a real mechanic though.

yeah, I'd seriously be looking at something with lower miles.

Yep I'm gonna agree with the others, even though the price is right are you willing to work to keep this car on the road? I'd look for something with 110k miles or less.

i would have suggested throwing in a cheap less used vr-4 engine, you can find plenty around if you look hard enough but then again, you may have to deal with transmission problems as well.

If you got it for cheap and put a newer or less used motor in you could probably get quite a bit for it

well i see you've already made your decision to not get it, but depending on how much they were asking it might have been worth it.

the ticking is just the lifters most likely, our cars do that alot. and turbo's can be replaced for $500 if needed.

how much was it?

It was $3,500...

The guy who was selling it told me the transmission used was like $7,500 (sounded sketchy to me)

... The only thing that concerned me was the miles... 164,000.

The car was pretty as hell. To tell you the truth, my pops said it was my decission, but he told me he has a REALLY bad feeling about it.

Last time he said that I ended up with a headache of a Zed.

You think I should have got it Young?

I don't like the sound of it as much anymore, it'd probably work and all but it would need some new stuff pretty soon from what you've said. I've seen lightly used VR4 5-speed tranny's for like $500 so for $1000 you could have newer turbos and a newer tranny.... then theres putting it all in there

My 92 vr4 cost me $3500 and it only has 55k miles

your amazingly lucky!

samhain, i think you should have got it. reason why is

1. your paying about $4,000 less then what its worth, and with that all probs could be solved. trannie, upgraded turbo's, and all other small miss haps.

most people are weary to high mileage. i say change the oil every 3grand and take care of it, the car can last forever.

2. you could get either a engine rebuilt or a low mileage used engine for 3 grand.

but its all on you how bad you want it and what you plan on doing with it.

if your looking for transportation to go all over with, then maybe its best to keep looking and find something with lower miles.

good luck bud :)
