Hello all. I have a 2001 Yukon and tested the parking brake the other day and it did not work. It seems like it was very easy to push to the floor. Any suggestions on how to adjust or fix the problem? Thanks.

The parking brake bands need to be adjusted at the rear wheels - Unfortunately the rotors have to come off to do it.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, it appears to be a common malady among just about all of GM's NBS full-size SUVs...and more often then not, GM tries to push it as "normal". If you can convince a GM dealership to perform the fix that GMCTech suggested under warranty...they are definitely more customer-oriented than other service departments!

GMCtrech: Parking brake bands adjustment you are
refering is the same as starwheel adjustment or
something else.

where or who can do the warranty service you are referencing here...our dealer is trying to pass off as normal as you say....over time the parking brake keeps getting easier to press to the floor, and doesn't seem to be holding the vehicle like it used to....

I have a 2002 XL and it is still holding...who knows for how long.

Can you take the truck to the dealer park it on a hill, ask the warranty department to stand with his/her foot in front of the tire a, set the park brake without being in park and see what happens?

If you complain long, hard, and loud enough, you should be able to get a dealer to "try" to fix it--I use the word "try" because although after they "fixed" it, the parking brake pedal would still almost go all the way to the floor. FWIW, even in that condition, it still held my truck in place even on a decent incline (e.g., my driveway) and w/ the tranny in neutral...but still, it is a bit unnerving to have the PB pedal practically hit the floorboard in order for the PB to fully engage.

Why would a dealer attempt a repair in which the engineers at GM have stated that there is no correction?mmmmmmmmmmmmm????????

The point is to make the dealer--and from there, the manufacturer--aware that it's unacceptable to have designed such a parking brake pedal which requires it to be--more often than not--depressed practically all the way down to the floorboard before the parking brakes engage. I mean, I betcha there isn't one person who wouldn't figuratively--if not literally--crap in his pants if he discovered that the main brake pedal had to be depressed all the way to the floor in order to engage the brakes; why should it be any different with the parking brake?

Are you putting on youe E-brake the right way?If you look in the manual it tells you,you have to push the regular brake pedal to the floor and then apply the E-brake.Then to release you must do the same.I am guessing it that way because of the rear disc.

Hi All,

Just went out and tried what the "Tony241" post suggested...did not make any difference. Tried in Park, neutral, reverse, drive and it did not hold either direction. My park brake does not hold at all on a 3 to 4 % grade.

Thanks to this forum for alerting me to the fact.

Don't know what I am going to do, but I am going to start and will let all know the results.

I am not concerned for me or those that read this forum, but for the 100's of thoudans that are not aware of it.

We must make our voices heard!! I guarantee lives are in danger...I was astounded!!

Happy Holidays and turn the wheel against the curb if you have one :)

Hi there,
I have a 2002 Yukon that has the same problem, In fact it's in th shop right now and they want me to replace the parking brake pads. I hardly drive the vehicle and hardly ever use the hand brake. I noticed that it went right to the floor when I did use it. But this morning as I got in the truck to go have it serviced, I noticed that it went completely to the floor and would not hold when I put the car in gear, the truck started roilling forward freely. Well the dealer is suppose to call me back cause I told him about this forum. I hope they start doing something about this problem and maybe do a recall??? I'll keep all you GMC Yukon owners posted...

Since this thread got bumped, I'll throw in another comment:

FWIW--the p-brake pedal on my '04 DXL can be depressed practically all the way to the floorboard...but it does hold my truck in place on even a decent incline.

Hi guys,
there was a thread either in this or the Chevy Suburban forum about parking brakes needing a redesigned part (clip?) to keep the brake pad from falling onto the drum and wearing out.

Will try to find it. Take care, Eggert :bananasmi

This Parking Break issue is happening to my 2000 Yukon Denali. Is this adjustment something that can be done at home or do you have to take it in? Just wondering because this seems like it would be dangerous.
roynunez -any word on yours?

Thanks, Josh

hate to tell everybody but, there is a tsb re: emergency parking brakes on the yukon xl 2001. the problem is a clip in the emergency brakes that holds the pads up from rotars. it can break, letting the pads fall onto the rotars. there is basically no way other than inspecting the emergency brake pads themselves to know whether this has happened or not. ours was shredded!! vehicle was in extended warranty but was able to get dealer to repair/replace at no charge--told them problem referred to tsb. live in OK not alot of need for emegency brakes on flat terrain.

good luck

Add me to the list. I have a 2000 Yukon and failed inspection today due to the E brake problem. I have heard that if I'm lucky it just needs to be tightened, but probably will have to have more expensive work done. I had no idea this was such a prevalent problem on all GM trucks and SUVs.

It looks like GM is recalling at least some of the vehciles with the parking brake problem. But only trucks with manual transmission.

I just spent $400 to get my 2000Yukon fixed to pass inspection.

Hey folks. Anyone ever come up with any new info on this parking break problem? I just took in my 01 Yukon XL in for the state inspection (TX) and was suprised to learn it didn't pass due to the parking break. I had no idea. The shop said it is extremely common on Chevy/GMC's and is due to the parking break pads wearing whether you use the brake or not. They say there was no recall on this, but there is a clip to remedy the problem from occuring. Thanks for the heads up GM! Has anyone fixed this themselves. Anyone have instructions? Would a Haynes manual tell me what I need to know? Gotta get this thing inspected soon. Thanks for the help.

have an 01 Yukon XL and have failed 2 NYS Inspections because of the parking brake problem not only is this a major pain in the butt, it is a safety issue, if GM is fixing PB problems of standard transmission vehicles than it is a safety issue that should be addressed on all GM vehicles, what must we do a class action lawsuit?
