Drain the oil and coolant. Remove the head. Clean the mating surfaces well. Check the head with a straight edge. If it is flat, reinstall. While you have the head off you may want to change the crank position sensor and the oil sending unit. Extra $20 but it is a lot easier to do with the head off. And these componients can fail and shut down the motor. Good Luck.

You forgot to tell him to replace the gasket.
The coolant won't have to be changed unless it has oil in it which I doubt it will.
Drain the oil ASAP so the corrosive anitfreeze doesn't damage your seals.

I should hope that if he/she can get the head off. He/she would have the sense to replace the part that caused all the headache. And you should drain the coolant to prevent so much pouring down on the lifters and such. While it is out, why not go crazy and spend $10 for new coolant. But you are correct, it could be reused, just inspect for oil and then strain out any debris. Expect this job to take 6-8 hours for a novice. Again Good Luck.

Shouldn't take that long really on a 4 cylinder.
