96 Jetta Engine light flickers

Hello all.
While driving to Florida, my check engine light came on for the first time. I was travelling about 80 mph and going up a steady grade (for 20 to 30 seconds) when I noticed it. I took my foot off the gas and the light went out. The light continued to come on under similar conditions for the whole trip. Curiously it always went off when I took my foot off the gas, and did not immediately come back on even on the steady grade. There was no loss of power, I got fantastic mileage and there was no other associated problem. Went to the dealer, who is at a loss for an explaination. He even scanned the car twice.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank, Mike

Hey i have the same EXACT problem. I posted about it with "flashing check engine light." Boschmann said that i might have a hole in my intake pipe somewhere. There is nothing mechanically wrong, just something stupid. Havent figured it out yet. Gotta get the obd II reader and fix it accordingly.

There should have been a code stored, I don't know why they may not have wanted to tell you what it was. It shouldn't erase except after alot of ignition cycles w/o the problem. You can have the code read for free at most Autozone & some Advance Auto Parts stores or whaterver you might have up there, but they don't have quite as specialized a scanner as VW.

Hi Boschmann
VW dealer is a personal friend. Checked for a code, there wasn't one stored. Only seems to happen under the "going up a sustained grade at 80 mph". Klaus told me not to worry if the performance wasn't effected.
Any other ideas???
Thanks, Mike
