Catalytic converter

I have a '99 cougar with <65,000 miles. My check engine light has come on and off. I was going to have the sensors changed so I had a mechanic look at it to see it that was the problem. My car is making a terrible rattling noise. He put it up on the racks and checked it out. He said it was the catalytic converter going bad and that changing the sensors would not eliminate the noise from the cat. conv. He also said that it should still be under warranty because of the milage. The warranty is for 80,000 miles or 8 years old. I will now have to take it to a dealer to be fixed. My question is this, Was he correct in saying it should be under warranty and the dealer will have to replace it free of charge?
Thanks,Rosanne

The rattling you are hearing is indeed the catalytic convertor, because its starting to fall apart. If you car is under 80,000 miles and the convertor needs to be replaced, then Ford will warranty it and replace it for free. Been there done that with my 96 contour.

Thanks for the info. I now know what action to take. This is a great forum.
