If you look around you will find that alot of the new cars that have the powder coated calipers are done in red...The pic I posted are not mine,I just used it to show the decals on the calipers.Red would look good!

I used a kit called G2 in red.
It was almost a perfect match and the link below is the best price around for the kit, plus if you order it this month you can get 5 bucks off and it would be 34.95 and that includes shipping.

I used the duplicolor caliper paint. It takes the better part of a day. Aside from putting the car up on jack stands, each coat takes about 5 minutes to apply, and you must wait at least 15 minutes before applying the second coat, or you'll screw up the first coat. With the finish on the calipers being so rough, it took, on average, 4 coats per caliper to really cover it well. When you're all done, you're supposed to wait 2 hours before you even put the tires back on. I don't know if this is because of better ventalation w/o the tires on, or to give the paint time to set up so that brake dust from the rims doesn't get embedded into the paint. (Maybe both?)

Then you're supposed to wait 24 hours before driving. And with an average of 4 coats per caliper, it takes awhile before the paint truly hardens. For me, it took a week.

This was also a good opportunity to do a brake job if needed, and replace the rotors like I had to. What surprised me was rotors were only 25 a piece

mine are red, but it is a pain to keep them clean!!! I usually wash my car about once a week, and by the end of the week, my nice red paint has faded into blackish redish. I dont get into the brakes that much usually either, any ideas on how to keep them cleaner???

With honey comb rims, (on 2 of mine) it doesn't matter what you done to them. You can't see them. But I like the rims when they are clean. That's about 15 mins a week.

I used the Duplicolor kit also.......and only $15!! Mine only required 3 coats per caliper and they look great. I did this over 6 months ago and thye still look great....no chips or fading.

Three positive points worth noting with this kit:
1) Inexpensive
2) Brush on (No risk of overspray)
3) Do not have to remove the caliper (No need to bleed the brakes)

getting paint is no problem for me i paint for a living i get a discount. i just cant decide on a color, my wife thinks its dumb to paint them but i think it looks sharp. especially since its got those really open rims that look like the 5 spokes twist, so you can see everything real well.

make sure you get heat resistant paint

Paint them red. Looks beautiful. I did mine with engine paint(plastikote) I put on 2 coats of rust coat primer (red oxide), followed by 4 coats of red paint for good coverage, followed again by 2 coats of clear coat (motomaster) shines REAL nice.

(I'd post a pic if I knew how)

I never though about clear coating them. That should make them easier to clean and give an extra layer of protection. Good idea

i used the XO Rust enamal paint. Its not heat proof but its still sticking since a year now.

depending on how dark green I think orange or just maybe a yellow. I also saw a changining color that looks like oil does in water.

You know I have been thinking about giving my 98 GTP a make over. Its the same color red as Big-L's and I was thinking about a Black Cherry base with yellow cals. emblem, etc. what do you think cass good combo? or do you have a better color combo that I should consider? I am not dead set as of yet I just want a color that stands out above the rest you know.
Plus cops seem to really watch me now not that I speed or anything.

kustomkid54
10-07-2004, 02:24 PM
GTP,
By make over, you mean turn it into a GTX? It's the title you need. There are hard to find, or have someone give them up. I'm shocked at the number of people who own GPs that say, "I never knew Pontiac make those". Then you get into the story of SLP, and the small differances.

I think that color combo would be great! There is a web site out there where you can superimpose your color combos on your car. I'll have to check with my son to see if he still has the url.

it appears that those GTX spoilers would actually hurt gas milleage because of how it catches more air than a standard spoiler.

I know, off topic, but I just though it was ironic :)

No kid I just mean new paint (Mines alittle faded and tired of the bright red) New gtp emblems on the side, new rims and tires, tint the windows, ETC...

What exactly is the difference between the GTP and GTX? Is the X faster? More HP? I really like my GTP it is fast and the power is great. With a few good mods I think I can get it up to be at least close to The GTO.

kustomkid54
10-08-2004, 08:51 AM
Just hood, spoiler, ram air box, pulley, tires and rims.
The GTX is faster, but not by all that much.
And as everyone knows, I bad mouth the new GTO because I think they could have done some more. BUT, the car is fast. But if I could jam a 8 cy. into my GTX (with rear wheel drive). I think I could blow one away. Now does anyone out there have $20,000.00 so I can build it?

You know I believe with the right mods Even with FWD I believe the GTP or GTX Can smoke a GTO. BTW I am not at all impressed with the GTO please don't think that I am in aahhh over that car I would give up my GP for anything, I love it.

This might be off the sub but I haven't seen a body kit That doesn't make it look like a import. Didn't NASCAR have a body kit on the GP when they used to race them? I need a body kit that will look good with the quad port ram air hood, any suggestions?

yeah, i like way GPs look in NASCAR too but NASCAR GPs front and back clips only have stickers for lights though. i haven't seen anything that has that look on the street. as for a gtp or gtx being able to smoke a gto, it'd never happen, because "there's no replacement for displacement". 3.8liters vs 5.7liters the difference is too big.

Au contraire, mon frere......I've got a pal who works with a GTO owner and they race down I-70 after work now and then. His '02 GTP hangs right next to the GTO up to about 100mph. In all fairness though, we're talking about a stock GTO and a heavily modded GTP.

You can tell your friend, he has the fastest GTP I have ever seen. I test drove the GTO. That car is fast. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v425/kustomkid54/1998PontiacGrandPrixGTP003.jpg

okay, now lets even up and give that gto a s/c or lets look at it like this, n/a gp vs gto. either way the gp is going to be looking at tail-lights.

BIG TIME!! But my GTP can carry more groceries and kids. :iceslolan

Nice sig pic, BTW....."Dont' talk to me about trust Manny, I don't like it......who put this shit together, ME, that's who! Who do I trust, ME, that's who!" I bought that on DVD recently. Great flick. Everyone I know has tried, at one time or another, to count all the F-bombs Pacino drops in that movie.

When does it matter what we were talking about? Brake something? I'd like to paint mine, but you can't see them. How's that? Now we are back on it again.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v425/kustomkid54/1998PontiacGrandPrixGTP003.jpg

yeah, that's found wrong with the gto that it's too small. i have cousin that has the caddy cts-v and that has the room in there.

i never tried counting how many times he says fudge, have to try it next time. but it might be impossible to get an accurate #, cause at the end when he all messed up on the coke and he's getting shot, it sounds like he's making new words.

okay lets get back to painting brake calipers. i think if you paint the calipers, you need the same color somewhere else on the car to help accent it. like if the car is gray and you want blue calipers, then you can add blue ghost flames. i like what Playa did with his car, yellow calipers and yellow badging.

carnutcass

why would you? but if you did the key thing in this swap would be the color of the calipers. i could only see this working if the calipers were a .... metallic blue, but it would have to be powder coated too.

Kid I live in San Diego and I doubt highly that a Hemi engine installed would come close to even a down payment. starting prices here are on average for 500,000 even in the ghetto they run high 300,000. So what woul be a estiment to have the fastest GTP?

Your looking in the wrong places. I'm from Michigan (but live in Florida now). I can get you a 1964 Plymouth for $32,000.00. But Calif. has always been a little HIGH.
