I do my own (minor) maintenance but am stuck on this problem. The car has about 140k miles. About six months ago, the car started stalling. When I tried to accelarate from a dead stop, the rpms would jump up and down and the car would stall. It allmost always re-started with no problem. Now it has started happening when I first start the car. Starts up fine, but at the first stop, it sputters and dies when I hit the gas. Any ideas? It's an older car and I'd like to fix it myself if I can. THanks in advance for your help.

what year and what type (gt, gtp, etc) Sounds like your Crankshaft Position Sensor also sputtering and stalling? I ran into ,what sounds like it may be similiar if not the sensor, I forgot to hook up a vac. line in my throttle body. Just some ideas

any codes stored in the computer? If there are no codes stored, I would say it's time for a tune up. IF that's been done recently, check fuel pressure at the rail, should be 31-33psi. If that's ok, the crank sensor can intermittently fail without tripping a code, and that would be the next thing to try

i was wondering how many wires are hooked to the cps sensor and if there are more than one, which one is the computer reading off? i was thinking that if you used a volt meter that you could see if the cps is failing.

it is two or three wires and I dont think you can test it that way. I hooked a meter up to a new one and also to my old one and got the same readings but you could definitly smell the sensor was burned inside. Besides if your going to go through all the trouble of getting to the sensor it won't hurt changing it out.
