1994 honda accord lx

hi all,

A few problems with my honda:

1. i crank up the engine and it fires but then shuts off
i try 3 x's and the engine starts fine. I drive around a bit
and its fine. But after letting set for a while, it returns to
3 or more times cranking the engine before it starts. I have
cleaned the battery post on the positive side by brushing off
the acid. any suggestions

2. irradic idling. i put come to stop and put in park and
the rpms jump from 1000 to 1500 and back down the 1000.

1) Sounds fuel related, not electrical. Possbible bad fuel pump or clogged or leaking fuel line/filter? Do you smell gas?

2) Check your vacuum hoses for a leak. Mine also had a bad fast idle valve that caused it to search like that. I've also heard that it could be you throttle position sensor.

How many miles, transmission, have you been good about getting it's regular maintenance?

well, i changed the fuel filter and put in air filter.

same problem. cranks for 2-3 times and is good to go.

about 80 degrees. tonige i started it and it took
3 tries. It would fire then cut off.

that leaves fuel pump . also i read on here, main fuel relay?
do i have one on 94 accord lx?

also should i trie fuel injector fluid?

i had this with my 94 lx it was the distributor this part is a onepies throway part $100 good luck

i am not sure had my mechanic do this for me i think it is a module in the distributor or somthing like that good luck

Two modules in the distributor, the ignition coil and the ignitor. Each one is about $100.

before replacing the module...you should check it first. when the car won't start...pop the hood...pull out one of the the ignition wires..point the tip to the valve cover bolt and then start it. see if you have any spark. may need another person to either start or watch for the spark. if there is spark but does not start. it may by your main relay which is bout 40-50 bux.

oh and yes 94 accord lx's have main relays

Great replies, i took to mechanic and he popped hood and
said that its a vacuum leak. Narrowed it down to replacing
the intake manifold gasket. Now it may not solve all the
problems but its a good start. thnks Mal for the insight.
I'll pass on the info to mechanic, 4.5 hours of labor at
50bucks an hour, but said he'd knock it down to 3.5.
So hopefully it will be fixed soon.
