Stud mount vs pedestal mount rockers

Ok Im doing some shopping for heads and I have learned that stud mount rockers are stronger than pedestal mount. No problem there.

My question is at what point do you need to replace pedestals for studs? Will a larger cam bring about this needed change? More RPM you start turning or what?

I'm not really sure about that one. But it would make sense that a very large cam and higher rpm's would call for more stength and durability.

I'll be honest here I'm not an expert on the stock Ford pedestal heads. I usually toss them out for aftermarket heads with stud rockers before i need to think about modding them so I could be wrong here.

I've never heard it put in the context of strength but in the role of adjustability. Ford pedestal rockers are a positive stop design and can't really be adjusted. Also a roller rocker was not made for a pedestal style head until about 2 years or so ago which has adjustability in them.

If your buying aftermarket heads 95% of them are stud mounted rocker set-ups so buy those and new roller rockers.

Well AFR 165 and edelbrock performers both come in stud mount and pedestal mount. Im not sure about edelbrock but the afr's are the same price for each.

The problem is if you buy the stud mount the rockers will run you another $285.00 bucks. Thats a hard pill to swallow after shelling out $1299 for AFR's. So now lets look at edelbrock. Not quite as good a flowing head as afr's but a very decent head for the price. $1050.00
Im not quite sure which move to make here. My wallet tells me to buy one of the pedestal style heads and run. Im just wondering is not buying the stud style a mistake.

Twisted wedge heads look like a kick ass head too but to do those on a stock engine requires pushrod replacement and roller rocker and they don't even come pedestal. $1500:banghead:

I hear what your wallet is telling you but I'd advise wait till you have the cash to spend the extra $300 on roller rockers.

Also there is a group purchase going on locally in my area for AFR heads. I can prob get you the heads cheaper than anyone else pm me.
