Newbie here,

I noticed this morning on the highway that i couldn't get up past 60mp.
I know that more than likely it is the transmission and I don't know jack
about when it comes to that. When i got to work I drove around the parking lot to see if it would change gears but I was afraid to try to get over 60mp. Reverse worked fine. Could it be low on trans fluid? It is hard to read the stick because there is no writing on it but it seemed to have about 2 inches on the stick.

Any suggestions on what I can check here at work before attempting to drive home? And what type of trans fluid would I add if needed.

92 Firebird Automatic Tans
V8

Sorry for the stupid ?s I'm tying to learn about this car.
Any advice would be helpful Thanks.

when you give it gas do the rpm's go way up and the speed doesn't? then u do need to rebuild or replace your tranny. mine did the same thing soon as i got to 45-50 the whole car would shake, wasn't shifting right. but before u do i would flush your trans. if you have to drive it take it easy or will raise the price to fix mine was about $2300

also look at the color of your fluid. is it red or a dark brownish almost black color.

sorry, one other thing. it's possible it could be a fuel problem. if your tranny turns out to look okay, i would try to change the fuel filter, or check the fuel pressure at the intake.

Thanks you guys for the excellent advice. It turns out that it is a combination of both your replys. The trans fluid was dirty and it definetly needed a new filter. The fuel injecters were getting a little clogged from blowback wich was causing the hesitation and loss in power. I also found out that there are some bad o-rings. I'm going to replace the engine in the next month or two. I just hope the beast holds out that long because it is my only car and a daily driver. The mechanic said cost and labor for a rebuilt V8 would run me around $1800.00 through him. Does that sound reasonable? He seemed to know his stuff from what i could tell and he owns an 85 Firebird?

Thanks again for the replies. It helped me to go in with at least a little bit of knowledge.
