Troubles... Need Advice!

I have a 2000 grand prix and the troubles started a few months ago. I noticed that when i really gave it some gas it would start to surge when i accelerated. Every now and then but not real often it will just die, like in the fastfood drivethrough. But it starts right back up. I took it to get checked and they said it might be the trany so i took it to the tranny place and they said it needed a new sensor. So i got it fixed. I still have the surging problem under acceleration. Just the other day I was driving on the highway and the tach droped to zero and the headlights dimmed for about 3 seconds, then it went back to normal. The only thing i can think of is the timing, fuel injectors, or distributor. If anyone has any thoughts on what this might be please let me know. Thanks!!!

Which sensor did you have replaced? Crankshaft position sensor? If not I would bet thats your problem. I had the same proble with mine and some of the better experts on the forum said that was almost definately my problem. Are you getting SES light? If you find out its something different please let me know?

Wow now that I started looking through the threads I see quite a few people that have very similar problems. I bet it is going to be the CPS. Is the best place to get it fixed the dealership as I am in college and have no tools for the DIY.

No SES light. The MAF sensor was replaced I think, leme check my records.

A local garage will probably be your best bet. I called the dealers in San Diego and they wnted a couple of hundred dollars to replace a 30.00 part.
One of the other members also suggested that it might be a good idea to go ahead and change out the cam shaft sensor while you have the harmonic balancer already removed. Just a thought.

Just wondering why the cam sensor should be replaced? Do they usually go bad around the same time?

Well I am not sure how close the time frame is but the way I understand it is close to the crankshaft sensor and if that is the case I would change them both out while the harmonic balancer is off. the part is under 40.00 and changeing it out now will save on the cost of a mechanic having to take HB off twice. Hopefully Big-L one of the more experience techs will chime in on if this is right or wrong if not i'll try to find later today and get back to you.

The cam sensor is in the timing cover at about 11'oclock in reference to the harmonic balancer as you stand on the passenger side of the car looking at the motor. it's just slightly above and to the left of the balancer, is held in with one bolt.

Compliments of richtazz.

Ok well it wasnt the MAF sensor that I just reciently had replaced it was the throttle position sensor, if that makes any difference. I still have to get the car in to have them look at the crankshaft position sensor. Damn sensors...

Thanks,
Greg
