winding sound - alternator??

I started having this winding sound on my Pacifica. Never heard it before but seems to give me the idea my alternator is about to give out. Took it in and mechanic said that this is common with the Pacifica and once it is "broken in" it will make this winding noise coming from the engine-alternator. Has anyone else experienced this and what came of it?

I dont own a Pacifica...Yet. I currently own a 98 Chevy Malibu but due to numerious continuing issues w/it, we are thinking about the possibility of buying a new car. We had a Pacifica this last June for a rental and WOW I must say it is at the top of our list. I would be very curious to know more about them (problem wise). I know they are brand new and people say usually new model cars have difficulty the first year but since this is the only entry on this website so far, I am impressed. Please let us know what comes of your alternator issue.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Visually inspect the accessory drive belt tracking by looking at the generator for any
sign of belt misalignment on the pulley. The belt must be centered over all groves on
the pulley. It should not overlap the pulley flange on one side (Fig. 1). If belt is
misaligned perform Step #2. If the belt is not misaligned on the generator pulley
proceed to Step #4.
NOTE: If the belt was misinstalled over the generator pulley, the generator does not
need to be replaced.
NOTE: If the accessory drive belt is damaged in any way it must be replaced. Refer
to the service information available in TechCONNECT or the 2004 Pacifica
service manual, publication no. 81-270-04035, page 7-6.
2. Loosen the accessory drive belt.
3. Place belt over all groves on the pulley. Be sure the belt is centered over all groves on
the pulley and does not overlap the pulley flange on one side (Fig. 1).

I test drove one, and may purchase one next year. I just got a new vehicle, but am considering a second one for use come winter.
I liked the Pacifica alot. The availablity of the 3rd bench that folds down is awesome. Roomier than a Highlander I test drove.
As for the winding noise, have you talked to the dealer you got it from? After reading your post, I contacted my dealership that I got my Jeep from, Rockland Auto Plaza, and asked them about the winding noise. So far, no one who has purchased a Pacifica in this area I'm in has contacted them about any noise. If you live in my area, maybe you can give them a call and see if your car just has one simple glitch

I've got a 2004 Pac and it makes a winding noise as a result of the engine fan kicking on, or kicking into a higer gear. Overall the car has been very solid and I believe the fan noise is a normal part of the engine operating.

I just bought a new Pacifica AWD, my wife and I really like it. We have less than 6K miles and no problems so far. Fuel mileage is around what was stated by epa ratings but appears to be getting a little better as it breaks in. No odd sounds yet!

We love our Pacifica AWd as well, especially on long trips. It has a great range, with a 23 gallon tank. We get about 22 - 23 on the highway so that takes us about 440 miles at least on a highway trip.
The ride is really nice. We are starting to put a few too many miles on it so the Grand Cherokee will have to take us on the next couple of trips. I'd much prefer the Pac.

I was given this TSB Number for a Problem I had with my 1999 Dodge Grand Caraven 070299 Could not get copy from dealer only number.

If you look, you'll find the culprit from the idler pulley noise is the 2004 water pump for the 3.5L. the pump was changed in late '04 for '05 model year Pacifica's, which don't make the "whining" noise.
There is a normal amount of alternator noise in my '05 (build date May '05), when the lights and fog lamps are on. Without lights though, you can't hear any whining noise at all.
When we went to buy a Pacifica (and swallow hard on that high price tag) we looked at '04's. Over half of the '04's exhibited the whining noise, and the salesman tried to explain it away. The 04's had around 15,000 miles on them with the noise..... our New '05 has 18,000 on it now, and still...no noise.
I would ask a dealer what the difference is and whether yours could be fitted with the newer water pump and idler pulley.
My wife and I love this car... our first new car in 16 years of driving Caravans, Voyagers, and T&C's. I admit it's no race car, but hell, I'm not 16 anymore, and the new charger has 4 doors, which is just wrong. the 300 looks like a matchbox car, so what else is a mopar nut to do?
A Pacifica, with all the goodies! :smokin:
