Inadequate Fuel Volume??

Well I think I found my problem with loss of power. I disconnected the fuel line where it meets the fuel filter this weekend and held a container under there while someone turned the key to the on position. During the prime cycle which lasts about 2 or 3 seconds I only got about a pint of gas that flowed out.

A very knowledgable mechanic friend of mine said that during the prime cycle I should get more like a quart out of it. Just wanted to verify this with someone else before I pick up a new fuel pump during lunch today.

You Need To Check This With A Gage At The Engine, Most Engines Have A Connector For This Purpose. That Will Tell You If You Have Correct Volume/pressure. If Not You Have A Bad Filter Or Pump Assy. My Money Is On The Pump.

I have adequate pressure, however I was told that you can have pressure and no volume due to the design of the fuel system. I've known this guy for over 6 years and he's never led me stray yet so I'm going to give it a shot tonight. I know the filter isn't clogged cause I just replaced it 2 weeks ago when I did the injectors.

Correct you do need pressure and volume. Thats why you hook up the fuel pressure gauge to test port and run engine not just the pump relay. also when fuel pump is shut off, pressure should hold and bleed down very slowly. My pump was operational (meaning you could hear it running) but I did exactly whatyou did by testing how much liquid comes out in a bucket. It filled quite a bit for 3 sec of running pump. but I still suspected it, went and bought a 100 psi scale guage tester w/ bleed valve so I could do it by the book. The fuel pump turned out to wasted.

Fuel volume was indeed the problem. Although it was holding pressure while driving and not bleeding down that fast either. But like I said I only got about a pint out of it during the prime cycle.
