Clutch problems 87 Jetta

Hello, I am new to the forum and very happy to have found it! My 87 Jetta is having clutch problems and I would appreciate advice (possible causes). The clutch pedal seems to stick in first and second gear. I have trouble engaging the clutch when coming out of neutral or a higher gear as well as going from 1st to 2nd.

Specifically, it takes multiple attempts and multiple depressions of the pedal to get it to go into 1st gear, less so with 2nd, but still some difficulty. By the time I get to 3-5 gears, there seems to be no problem.

Is this the clutch itself, other mechanical areas associated with the clutch or...maybe... does this year of Jetta have a fluid to check?

My local import mechanic has been less than effective and charges far too much. I have worked on most of my American made cars, but much of the VW is different.

Thanks! (feeling dumb in Kansas)

Is it that you're having trouble getting into first or second when the car is stopped? You may want to ensure the clutch cable is adjusted properly, it nay have too much freeplay. It also may be a transaxle problem. You can check the gear oil level, or it may need changing. It could be the clutch, but it is an uncommon way for it to go bad.

Thank you! I do believe it was the cable adjustment. There was about 1/2 inch play in the tension. I tightened it and seem to be doing fine!
