Hi hi peoplez. I have windows 98 SE and I wanted to know if it would be possible to get some kind of japanese plug-in so that I could type the characters in my system ( like in folders and files ) I just tried getting this one thing that my friend sugested, the "Microsoft Global IME 5.02 for 32-bit Windows" off of the microsoft site. I installed and restarted computer like usuall. My friend said that you should be able to go into the controll panel, and change some regional settings but it doesnt seem to be working the way that it should be. Any help would be apretiated ( lol crappy speller )

you just need a japanese keyboard (well it helps so you know what you are typing and I believe there is also a kana key to switch from katakana to hirigana) and just add japanese as an input language. I do this on all of my computers because my wife is japanese, but we run windows 2000 :-(
In 200o there are a few ways to get to it, one is to go in the text services in the control panel then just add japanese, it's pretty simple.

hope it helps some ??

hmm well ... I guess the only other possibility is to GET a japanese keyboard. I still dont see any settings that make it work, and maybe sticking a japanese keyboard in might just jump start something inside this comp. I don't have the settings that you are talking about. So I guess the question is is it even possible to do what I am talking about on 98. ( lol kinda short on money right now so it might be a whiles before i buy a more recent os )

But typing wasnt the only thing that i was concerned about. I wanted to be able to read it too because at this one Aki Matsuri Japense festival thingy, i saw hella japanese programs donated from microsoft there for REAL cheep. They had japaense xp professional and home edition for 20 BUX !!!! I was way to late and didnt even have money for that. But i didnt get a chance to pick up the second lastest Microsoft office for 5 bux and the mac version for 3 . Hehe so i cant even install because i cant read anything on it ( its just a bunch of code where the charaters should be )

Well I mean you dont HAVE to have a japanese keyboard to type in japanese, i am able to type it online and i can do with it fine ( probably faster since im a good keyboarder, i wouldnt have to worry about new keystrokes ) But...where do you think I could pick up a Japanese keyboard? Ive been in many many computer stores but I have never seen one. Is there anything different about the connection or anything that i should know about it?

Thanks again

Since your wife is Japanese, she can arrange the shipping details. It's up to 500 Yen, which is around $7, give or take. It has a PS/2 connector which your PC should have.

Hmm thats pretty good but like ... how much is it. I don't see any yen symbles anywhere. hehe. Plus it wasnt me who had the japanese wife, its the other guy. I have a japanese girl friend but yeah lately shes been kinda urh ... yeah. But is it really that good to get a japanese character keyboard. I think that i could do just fine with out it ... what do you think?

Up to you, really. The IME utility for Windows has the ability to write in Japanese, but you just need to know what you're trying to type. The problem with writing/typing Japanese is the hundreds and hundreds of different characters. Are you writing in Hirigana, Katakana, or Kanji?

You also have to be in a program that supports the IME input, like Notepad, MS Word, and I think Internet Explorere will support this as well. You need to install the Japanese language support for Windows programs to "see" the characters, and you need the Japanese input method (IME) utility for Windows in order to actually type it.

And that auction was from Yahoo! Japan. All auctions are in Japanese Yen. :) The 500 in the upper right corner is how much it's going for. There's no Yen symbol because "Yen" is spelled out, so you see a Japanese character instead of the Yen symbol. :p

The Japanese keyboard won't really do you any good though because you're using the US-based Windows. You really won't be able to take full advantage of it unless you either switch Windows to Japanese or get the Japanese version outright. Just stick with the Windows IME program.

And if you don't want your girlfriend, I'll take her. I want a Japanese girlfriend. :D

hehe wow hmm ... ill think about that one. My japanese girlfriend that is lol. We have like no chemistry going on but w/e. These threads arn't about her.

But anyways I just went to my little brother's middle school because it was open house. I went to visit old teachers and stuff like that, and so i go into my favorite class bakk then, japanese class. And so my teacher had about 50 japanese keyboards ( just like the ones that you are talking about ) So i picked up myself one for 10 bux hehe. He said that it was for some company in japan, but like the bussiness went bad or something and through friends and connections he got them. Pretty good huh. It has everything that a normal japanese board would have, and its USB so thats another plus. He is also selling a Japanese apple laptop for 50 bux. Its pretty good, Ethernet, USB connections, Cd-rom. Only reason hes selling it is because he got a newer one. hehe When i was in his class, it was a legend.

So if anyone is ineterested im sure that my old teacher wouldnt mind selling some keyboards to anyone who wanted it online.

I may have to take you up on that offer for a Japanese keyboard. It'll be a bit though - right now lots of companies get my paycheck so doesn't leave me much to spend around. :p

You can add a picture from your PC into your personal "gallery" in your Control Panel. There's a link to your Control Panel (User CP) at the top. Just link to it after you upload it from your PC.

And I wish I had Japanese class in middle school. I started taking Japanese in college earlier this year, but being broke meant I had to leave school. :( I'll have to pick it back up at a later point eventually.

Whoops, nevermind. There's a link near the top of the page that says "Gallery". I've never really used it, so forgot what to do. :p You can register in there to set up your own gallery and then upload your images. When you view them, you'll see something under the picture that says "Share this photograph on the message board:" and will have a link you can copy and paste into your message. It even already has the image tags on there for you.

haha
That cracks me up. :p

Just be mindful of brining up old threads though. The mod's tend to become "less than happy" with people who do that.

sorry this doesnt help, but in xp there is a way to do it with xp computer with an american keyboard. i saw a bunch of asian ppl in the library at school doing it. there was a 2 letter abbreviation of the langauge in the right corner of the tasktop indicating the langauge they were typing in.

Only thing that's going to change your file tree and programs to Japanes is to switch to the Japanese language in Windows. Only way I know of to do this for Win98 SE is either switch to Japanese or install the Japanese version of Win98 SE.

Anything beyond that is out of my expertise. :)
