Cleaning filter?

I Have a 2002 rm125 and my friend says i need to clean and re-do filter everytime i ride and, when i go on a 3 day ride i need to clean and re-do it half way through the trip. is this true? would it be bad to clean maybe every other ride? thanks

It is best to clean and lub every ride but if you skip doing that a couple of times it wont kill the bike

u dont have to clean the air filter every time, just hold a side up to the sun and if you can see through it is good

i wash mine every ride and make sure you always use filter oil (a good kind i dont like spray on) and ALWAYS put grease around the filter for a good seal

Some of your advice is really bad Zeth.

AIr filters get idrty in the areas that the most air flows through first, and you can EASILY be compromising performance by not cleaning out that area, even if you can see light through the rest of it! Not to mention that cleaning the filter often will prevent dirt from 'working' it's way through the filter and into your engine.

How often should you clean your airfilter has a lot to do with how much you like your bike and how much money you have to do repairs with; coupled with how lazy you are.

I love my bike. I clean my airfilter every other ride MINIMUM. If it's really dusty, every ride. Cleaning during rides should not be necessary under any normal conditions (sand storms aside).

yaa i cant see thru my filter even when its clean cuz the foam is realy thick and its two layers

i like too always have a few filters so when im at the races or out of town i dont have too wash till im home. just change the filters out just make sure you clean the inside of the air box before removing old filter so dirt dosent get inside. i wash my filter in my parts washer then wash again in dawn dish soap and hot water, never had a problem, in the parts washer i mean i just use the brush to get the big stuff off. always let it dry on its own or i use a floor fan and some wire to air dry it faster. bel ray makes great foam filter oil, last along ways and is fairly cheap

BTW, typical parts washer solution is Mineral Spirits. I understand that it can break down some adhesives in some air filters. I have never seen this though, and I use mineral spirits as well.

Why I don't use my parts washer for cleaning air filters is beyond me, and gonna change right now. Thanks for the great idea.
