Honking noise in steering

My father has an '84 B2000. I've noticed it has a honk/moan type sound emanating from the steering with even the slightest turn left or right. (Intermittent) What is most unusual is that it non-power assisted steering. Weird huh?

Has anyone heard of the cause of this condition or can lead me to a TSB?
