ok, im gonna respond, and then lock this, because it always turns into a big argument in semantics.

First and foremost "Ram Air" is a marketing name, as an aeronautical engineering major, i can honestly tell you that the principle behind functional ram air, like that used on the SR-71 blackbird only works at supersonic speeds, and actualy works to slow air down entering a gas turbine engine to prevent blow out at such speeds. any automotive maker that claims to have this work on a car going 60mph, or even 200mph, is lying.

What the SS and WS6 have is a functional cold air induction, where the Z28 and Trans am Fbodies have air coming in from near the radiator, which is understandably hot, the SS and WS6 get cold air from a hood mounted scoop that brings the air from outside the engine bay, into a closed airbox, and into the engine, this colder, denser air produces more power and is therefore functional.

the reason that this is not "Ram Air" is that with a naturally asperated engine, air will only fill the scoop to 1 atm, or one times the athomosphereic pressure, and at that point, any further air will devert around the scoop as if it were a solid object, because it is not under enough force to presurize the air in the scoop. so no more air is being "rammed" into the engine than it would be normally taking in, its just that the air is cooler than the air in the engine bay.

ok, i changed my mind, ill leave it unlocked, just in case further clarification is needed, but as soon as this becomes a big argument it will be locked.

So the SS does have a functional hood?
And "ram air" does not at all add any psi or any sort of forced induction at all, it's just cold air intake? this is kinda hard for me to believe.

93-97 SS yes, has a functional hood
98-02 SS no, does not have a functional hood

in 98+ it could be made functional though is my understanding...

Actually the 98-02 Hoods have the opening and route the air strait to the intake box.

I agree with 89 on the whole "ram air" thing.
