I know this isn't the right place for this..But I like the answers I see in the firebird threads so I am going to ask it in here...
I have a car that won't start (not a firebird) I had it towed to a garage where they say they "think" it is the fuel pump, but it will be 400 to fix. The fuel pump is in the tank I think..Anyway What if they buy the fuel pump that cost 300 and put it in, then it is not the fuel pump.. Will they charge me for the new pump even tho I didn't need it.
I say no they won't. But someone told me that they would because they had to put the money out on the pump..I don't want to buy the pump myself and then have it not be it..The garage didn't sound too sure that it was the pump.

They will charge you for the fuel pump. They will also charge you for the labor. If they do the work you will be charged. If they aren't sure what the problem is then they should do further diagnostics before jumping in to replace the fuel pump. The easiest way is to check fuel pressure if there is none then the pump is bad, however make sure that the pump is getting power, could be the fuel pump relay which is a cheap part.

You should be able to hear the fuel pump run when yor turn the key to 'on'.
IF THEY ARE NOT SURE IT'S THE PUMP DO NOT LET THEM DO IT !!
If it's not fixed when they replace your pump, they will tell you- "Well the pump was definately bad...BUT there is something else wrong also"
Trust me I should know... :)

I work at a shop. Yes, if they replace the pump you will have to pay for the part and the labor. However, they can take your pump out and test it (just need a jumper box) and if it purrs, then it's not the pump...

I hope they don't pull out the fuel pump to test it !!???
2 minute test with a Fuel PSI tester will let you know if its bad- Could be a simple relay.
