86 civic si idle and other issues

I just got a 86 civic si and most the time it idles at 1500--too fast. sometimes it will die when at sits their at idle. it runs good off idle, most of the time, but sometimes when your cruising it will cut out and then it will pick up again. Anybody have any suggestions for getting these problems sorted out.

check out your fuel filters....might be cloged...i think theres 2........check out any thing that has to do with fuel......it just might be that..

Thanks for the help, but I already replaced the fuel filter. I believe the idle issue is the idle air control valve(I have a new one on the way). I still have the cuting out problem though. As soon as the car warms up it will only idle, and if you try to give it gas it will stall, but if the temp gauge is under about a third of the way up it runs fine. ANy help would be appreciated thanks russ

by the way ive replaced cap, rotor, fuel filter, plugs and wires including coil wire.

I fixed the idle problem (it was IAC) but the car still sputters and if you try to give it any gas it stalls. It usually happens when it's warm but sometimes it will do it when its not warm.

Could be low fuel pressure or a bad throttle position sensor (TPS). Use your manual and an ohm/volt meter to check your TPS. It is located on the firewall side of the throttle body. It is also permanately riveted to the throttle body so you will have to replace the whole thing if it's bad.

Check for ECU codes.

I replaced the fuel pump checked the tps and the ecu is giving no codes.

The problem seems to happen more when the engine is warm but does it when its cold too. It will always idle but sometimes the idle drops a few hundred rpms and if you try to give it any gas it immediatley stalls, and when it stalls you can only get it back started by holding the gas pedal to the floor and cranking.

Sounds like it's not getting enough fuel.... Did you check you're O2 sensor? Just curious...

the fuel pump is probly messed up.....check if its getting the proper voltege...........or the o2 sensor could be clogged or melted....since your car is fi the smallest thing will tell the computer to run poor.....

Did you ever find an answer to this problem? I have the same problem with my 86 CRX. Replaced plugs, leads, cleaned injectors, had fuel pressure tested, checked all air lines. Idle is fine but as soon as the gas is applied it will momentarily rev up and the cut out and even start running in reverse for a second. :confused:

I did solve the problem it was a bad coolant temp sensor. the one in the block that goes to the computer not the one for the gauge.
