The big B18A turbo let down

I'm working on a b18a swap (from a 90 Teg) into my 89 CRX Si.....nothing too fancy to begin with...intake, exhaust, cams.........but then I started thinking TURBO (Yea, Baby!!!)

I searched the California ARB EO list and found 2 listings for CA SMOG LEGAL kits. One by HKS, the other by Greddy. I couldn't find the HKS kit listed on their website so I called them and they told me it never went into production. I called Greddy and they either don't make it anymore or never did to begin with, the guy wasn't sure.

So it seems my smog legal b18a turbo dreams may always be just that...DREAMS.

Unless, of course I'm missing something.

any b series turbo kit will work with the b18. Will any others pass smog?

In order to pass smog there has to be an EO (Executive Order) issued by the California Air Resource Board (CARB) for the turbo kit that lists the specific engine (B18A, B18B, etc..) and the specific year.

To get an EO, the manufacturer has to submit the kit and pass emission testing.

In my case it would have to be a kit for a 1990 Integra B18A. The only ones I could find on the CARB website were the Greddy and HKS kits and you see where that got me.

ah yes, florida is nice. hell the laws are so lax here i have a damn high flow cat that i know is not even CARB legal:evillol: but why don't you just save your old manifold and plumbing and when it comes time to get your emissions checked hook it back up and then take it off. sorry i live in fl and don't know cali laws.

move out of california.

Cali is a nice place to live if you want to have your car stolen 3x a week and have to suck off some smog tech to get your car on the road becuase it has an illegal turn signal bulb

Can you find the CARB Id numbers if you can I can get you the GREDDY Carb ID sticker. Yes it would be a legal sticker. So here is the deal if you get a greddy Turbo for any b18 motor I can get you the sticker to make it legal. ALSO this goes for any turbo kit from greddy I can get the sticker to make it CARB legal. Check out mine.

man I thought everyone understood to mount the MSD away fro engine heat and vibration. Thats what the pasenger floor board is for.

When I showed the guys at MSD how I set mine up they said it looks good a great location in a civic. Hmm I guess they were Bullshitin me huh?

thats a solid state iggnition, vibratoin and minor heat are not going to effect it.

I read in honda tuning a few minutes ago it was illegal in cali to put a larger engine in your car than what it originally came with. Has an interview in it with a guy incharge of the Drag Net police thing that cracks down on illegal modifications and racing and such.

BINGO. In Cali, if you have a 1.6L motor stock, then you can only replace it with a 1.6L engine. Your only option is being able to replace it with the same engine out of a NEWER car...but no larger displacement (Unless you do a stroker kit, or bore it over.)
So, before you go wanting that Turbo, you want a better D16a6. Smog Tech will look for the D, if he see's a B, you're done, game over.

I have done MAJOR research on smogging cars in California. If you want to get really into it you could legally put a Chevy (V8 that is) car motor in a civic and it would pass the visual and emissions tests.

Heres the deal you can put ANY car honda or acura motor in your civic what ever. You CAN NOT put any Truck type motor in your civic ie..CRV motor in a civic. Thats the only limitation in California. larger engine is not a limitation. If somebody wrote that in a mag they should be FIRED cause there full of shit.

If you like to get more into this subject you can call me I dont feel like typing all focken night about something you guys read in a Dumb ass mag. Read Playboy it will give you two more about california smog laws.

hey I dont give a fuck either way, dont live in california. This is a quote from Sergent Sloan of San Diego's Drag Net Unit as appeared in November 2004 Import Tuner
Putting a stolen motor in a vehicle or putting a larger motor in the car that hasn't been approved by CARB. If you put a B18 engine in a car that originally had a B16, that won't work.

well either way its legal there focken stupid and have not done the research. Now I have run into a ref that will tell you things are not legal cause they think there GOD and can just fail you for what ever fancys them. I found out if its legal and you know it tell them your calling there supervisor and then they change there mind. REFS in California are assholes for sure they say alot of untrue things to fail you No lie. But if you know what you are doing in california you could smog anything you want as far as swaps go and the motor meets its orignal smog requirements not the vehicle its going into.

Like I said, dont effect me either way.
