hi,
I'm looking around to try and find a trubo that will work with a 1999 GSX. After some research, I narrowed my search down to a 16g. I want to keep my car a daily driver, becasue I'm only going to use it for street anyway, but I want to get some nice horsepower out of it as well. Also, having a turbo with a fast spool would be nice. I know that the spooling time on a 16G is around 3000-3500 RPM, but there are alot of versions of the 16g like the evo and the BIG16g. What would be a good version of the 16g that would be closest to what Im looking for? If you can help, can you tell me what kind of horsepower I would achive from it? Also, where I can find one and DIFFENTLY how the spool is. Thanks for the help

EVO Big 16g...
flows almost as much as a 20g with less lag. very streetable and a killer at the track with the right support and mods. with a GSX and the right driver high 11's are not unthinkable :)

Yeah, with the minumal price difference, there is no reason to not got EVO3 16g. SBR was selling them for like 560 shipped a while back. Thats peanuts for a turbo. I think it will fit your goals nicely, if a decent street car is what you are after.

about how much longer is spooling time on the the EVO 16g than on the stock?

~3300-3500 rpm. You could get a lot of different numbers, and it really doesn't matter. 300whp to 350whp is my guess. Track times is where a turbo is measured. Anywhere from high 12's to high 11's.
Road Race Engineering sells the install kit for a 16g turbo, and I think Slowboy racing has the cheapest EVO3 16g's right now at around 569.

You will do things right and ensure you have all the necessary parts if you buy a complete install kit for a 14b/16g from a vendor. These are really expensive, though. You can piece together the "kit" you need from oil feed and return lines from other 16gs or 14bs, along with a 1g J pipe that you can pick up on ebay. It should be easy to get all of the gaskets, lines, and the J-pipe you need for under $100...most vendors charge $200+.

The EVO3 16g won't break much, maybe blow a headgasket. If you had a better gasket and maybe ARP head studs, I don't see the turbo making enough power to break anything, at any boost. What boost you'll run is dependent on if you knock or not. It will probably be around 19psi on the street and the fastest evo 3 16g's push 28 or 29psi.

So I can run 19 PSI safetly on pump gas with no other mods?

Nope. You'll need fuel upgrades, tuning/logging devices, and good intercooling.

What psi can I run without having to screw around with a fuel controller?

Each setup is different. You really need to datalog to know when you are actually running out of fuel system capacity. But with a 14b and Supra sidemount, I could get away with ~16 psi on pump gas. On a warm day and stock IC I could run as high as 18 psi. Its not about boost, its about airflow. Increase the aiflow at the same boost pressure, and you need more fuel to go with it.

flow too much air with improper fuel control and you will hit fuel cut.

thanks for the help.... what is the best fuel controller to get?

probably S-AFC2 for most people. DSMlink is the best for non-pros, AEM EMS has some more features if you can understand it and need it.

Read the guides. DSMtuners has one for S-AFC2 if I'm not mistaken.
