startup question

quick question.. when i start my 91 chevy blazer s-10 v6... alot of white smoke comes from the tailpipe just when it is started goes after the smoke has cleared it dosent do it again.. is that a normal thing??? is there something i can do to stop it from happening??
it really started happening after i got an oil change.. if extra oil is added would it cause this effect???

my father said that it was fine just extra stuff burning off... but it is not very cool lookin to have all this smoke comin out...

i put to much oil in my 95 and it smoked. check your oil level when its cold. i had to drain some out and it became a mess.

Kind of a funny story relating to that.

I knew a guy in the army and his car was smoking like a mosiquito fogger. I asked him what he did and he said he added some oil. I asked him how much and he said " I filled it up ". Sure enough he filled it to where he could see it from the filler cap.
The oil was going up through his pvc valve into his air cleaner and through the throttle body. After draining a lot of oil and a new air filter and a lot of rags it took a while for the smoke to stop.
By the way he was a mechanic.

well when i say i over filled it... on the dipstick it was a little bit up past the full line.. i already have drained some oil out... any ideas?

Ok, here goes:

1. White smoke = coolant or water
2. Black smoke = running very rich
3. Blue smoke = excess oil burning or consumption

If you have white smoke, like steam, put your hand in front of the exhaust. If water condenses on your hand, that is what it is. Next, smell the exhaust, does it smell sweet? If it does it is antifreeze.

Causes are moisture condenses in the cat and exhaust and when you start up, the exhaust system is warming up, the water starts to steam and is exhausted until it is gone. Usually in colder weather. Next could be a weepy head gasket. After the engine warms up, everything expands and seals off the weep.

If the exhaust smells sweet or you have noticed a drop in your coolant level, you can check a weepy head gasket by doing a compression check on the engine when it is cold.

no see it smells really bad.. and the smoke only comes out the tailpipe when it first starts... after that it dosent do it anymore.. but it is a huge cloud of smoke when it does start.

Also, water and condensation is normal to see coming out of an exahust system when you first start it.

Is it just water vapor or does it smell like antifreeze?

How is you antifreeze level?

hmm... it smells like exhaust.... it dosent have a sweet smell to it just a smokey smell...

It is just condensation. Water vapour accumulates in the exhaust system and when you warm up your truck, the water evaporates out of the exhaust and when the water is gone the exhaust clears up.

It's normal unless it is huge white plumes of thick white smoke.

If it is just white clean water vapour, it is normal.

well it is a big cloud of white smoke... lingers for a little bit too..

What temperature is it outside when this happens?

it was doing in the summer time... i live up in the north country... it is now fall and so around the 50's is the temp... still doin it as well

Remove your plugs and look for white deposits on them.
