2004 CR-V steering and driver seat VIBRATES when in drive with foot on the brake. Worse with A/C or defrost on but there ALL the time. It is NOT the A/C compressor turning on/off as dealer suggests. For someone who sits in traffic for 2 hours each day this is MADDENING.
Anyone else? Can I get a local mechanic to try setting idle up or would this nullify warranty. As I said, vehicle is brand new and dealer will not help.
When car first starts and idles at or just above the 1 mark it is NOT vibrating. 5 minutes later, it starts and never stops. Empty soda cans rattle, my thumb shakes, my vision vibrates and they tell me this is normal?!?!?
Speeding along the highway she is NOT vibrating at all. Rolling slowly down the street, no vibration. Only in drive with foot on the brake.
Any advice appreciated.

Vibration is probably engine related...you don't say how many miles are on the vehicle, but higher mileage opens up many more causes. Suggest having diagnostics run on engine for potential low idle speed, clogged injectors, fouled spark plugs, and so on.
As for the warranty, there is absolutely no reason you have to take it to the dealership. So long as the work as done with quality standards and parts that are at least as good as Honda parts, they cannot refuse you warranty coverage. However, that being said, the dealership is much more familiar with typical problems and is usually better at fixing such things.
By the way, if it's under warranty, why don't you take it to the dealership?
Good luck,
Dave

Thanks for your reply, Dave. The vehicle is brand new. The problem was felt the first time I sat in heavy traffic, but was not as bad.
I brought it back to dealer at 200 miles. Test drove with a mechanic who said he felt it. Went to pick up car and they said they didn't feel it. Service manager said he would keep another day and check it himself. Vehicle returned with report, "adjusted motor mounts". I also noticed they let some air out of tires. Service manager said I wouldn't feel it anymore. It was not fixed. It was exactly the same. I started to think there was something wrong with me and that I just was not used to this kind of car. (My first new car).
Problem seemed to be getting worse as mileage came on. Friends/family start to drive my car and feel the same, think it's idle, and say it is NOT my imagination and NOT normal for a new car. I brought it back a second time at 2,900 miles. I ask if the idle can be checked as the car does not do this at all when it first starts and is idleing a bit higher. They look at me like I'm an ignorant person and say, "the idle is computerized, it's not the idle. The idle is fine." I leave it another day and get it back with the repair note: "adjusted the transmission side mount to minimize vibration".
Problem is getting worse. Car is now 6 months old. Family is telling me to use the lemon law giving them one more chance to fix it and then get a lawyer! I am alone and need my car. I don't want/need legal problems. I love the car, otherwise. Once again, it does this when in drive with foot on the brake. It builds worse and worse the longer you are stuck in traffic until steering wheel, seat and whole front end can be SEEN vibrating (not just felt). I suggested the idle last time and they dismissed me. I will try to say it exactly as you wrote it: "having diagnostics run on engine for potential low idle speeds". Is there anything else SPECIFIC I can ask them to look at?
Thanks in advance!

NYCSmile,
Hey, try going to HONDASUV.com....its a free forum and theres alot of folks who can give you insight on the CRVs for most issues. Also, heres is link to the list of Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) that most dealers get from the manufacturer for certain identified problems for models:
http://www.edmunds.com/maintenance/recalltsb.do?step=tsb&year=2004&make=Honda&model=CR-V&style=LX+AWD+4dr+SUV+%282.4L+4cyl+4A%29&zip=96797&synpartner=edmunds&tid=edmunds.g..mnt.step2.9.Honda*
Dont forget to log into the Honda Owner Link website.
As for the warranty, lemon laws has provisions if the car has been out of service for a certain amount of time for the same problem or if defect is in any way dangerous...but not to sure how the lemon law applies to your state so you might want to check with your local Consumer Protection office and BBB.
Also, try going to another Honda Dealership. Don't let them tell you that you have to go back to the original delear that sold you the car. I believe They are obligated to address any Honda covered by the basic warranty. Have them check out your idle lby asking them to see if the car has an EIC (Electric Idle Control) Valve and if so, if it is operating correctly. You can also asked a local Honda Mechanic Shop if they would know this. That way, you're already informed before your next visit to the Dealer. I hate it when they (dealer) treat you and other customers as if your concerns or issues were just pulled out of the air. That is little to be desired for customer service. When you go to the service department, you should get those written surveys from American Honda afterwards. Be honest about your treatment, service, and the final outcome.
I have a 04 CRV EX since Aug 04 and it rattles and shakes when going over rough roads...more so then my prev 95 Maxima with over 127k miles (boy do I miss her). I since let out air from my tires at the manufacturers suggested 26 psi (me thinks too low), but, it seems to smooth our some of the rough areas when driving....Im sure my mileage will suffer. I've had various interior panels pop loose or curl (probably lesser quality plastics) and have had visit the dealer over 5 times already befor my first oil change (have 2400 miles so far).
I know yours is only vibrating during at idle with your foot on the brake and the A/C on. If they've checked the engine/tranny mounts, then its gotta be something with the idle. I could be wrong, but, there is nothing against having a reputable mechanic shop specializing in Hondas to get the car checked out for you such as a diagnostic. But then again, you'd have to pay for the diagnostic and that may just p#*$ off the Dealer more but thats your right as a consumer. Ultimately, its up to you. Car is still under warranty for 3yrs/36000. Dealer is responsible to address and fix any issues with the car during this period.
Otherwise, good luck and keep up the pressure. THey say the squeeky wheel eventually gets the oil......don't know where that quote came from.. Aloha!!!
