Some real photos (56k maybe a little slow)

Iv seen lots of holiday snaps, some very nice land scapes of other peoples countrys and some small badly resized thumbnails that apprently represent good photography.

However, I have yet to see some technicly correct and aestheticly appealing photographs here.

So Ill post some of my own.


All were shot with a Canon A80 useing manual Macro settings.
They are all taken at the waterpump park around Lake pupuke in Aucklands NorthShore on a lovely over cast early spring afternoon.

I was amazed at how friendly the swans and geese where, I had hoped on getting some more conventional looking photos for another forum, but the birds had other ideas, and wanted to get as close to the camera as they could.


This guy just couldn't keep away, might have had something to do with the slice of bread I had in my camera hand:

And this guy was just being checky, I laid the camera on the ground under him, and used the flip out LCD to compose these:

And this is a missed opertunity.
I had hoped to catch one stretching his wings front on, but it was not to be. I still like this one though:

All the photos have had some minnor levels adjustments in photoshop, and the ones in the black frames have had some cloning and or cropping done to remove unwanted elements.

All nice, especially the fourth one. However in the first one, is the head slightly out of focus?

It might be fractionaly, the A80 has quite a wide DOF though, but then it is hard to get it to focus on a set point, especialy when your looking down at the LCD with a 5kg goose hovering over your gead :D

An unsharp mask does sharpen the image a little, so yes the focus could be better.

i don't see how these are much better then anything else that's been posted on here so far.

doesn't mean they're not nice though.

So you do absolutly no changes to a film photograph in the darkroom? Or request that the lab make no changes?

Its a topic for its own thread though, however anything you can do to a digital photo you can do to a film photo, it still remains a photo.

I'm an aspiring photographer myself, but when I take digital photos, I find myself adjusting something with Photoshop from time to time. That's what Photoshop is for.

If anything I would have to say that Digital is becoming even more "real photography" as higher quality digital SLR's become availible for a realistic price to most "pro-sumers". I do agree with you on the photoshop comment though. :-)

Its been my experiance that those who don't like digital altered images are only upset that they are unable to do similar work themselves.

That said it is impossible to take a film photograph and not manipulate it, the simple process of developing it requires manipulation of the image.
It is however quite possible to take a digital image and display it in a way that has undergone absolutly no post proccessing, making it a more "pure image".

Anyway, I have started another thread just for this debate,, if you wish to continue it, then take it there.

Aflac!:lol: Thats the first thing I thought of also. (For those that do not get it, theres an insurance company here in the states that uses a duck as their mascot and the duck always says the name of the company. Aflac.)

I have yet to figure out the macro settings on my digital camera, so i can never get any shots like that. Those shots of Moppie are really cool and very well done. The head shot out of focus is really not noticable.
