2004 Tire Monitor Sensors

Hey everyone...just bought a new 2004 Tahoe LT and found this forum. First thing I did was order some rims and tires on-line. I bolted the new wheels and tires on the Tahoe and then got an error message, "CHECK REAR TIRE MONITOR."

After bringing it back to the dealer, we determined that each wheel and tire needs the sensors that are inside of the tires. But what if I don't and I just continue to get the "CHECK REAR TIRE MONITOR" signal...will that affect anything else? The mechanics at the dealer said, "I don't know if it will or not." Great some help. I'll put in the sensors later on when I change out the tires, but for now, I don't want to hassle taking the tires off of the wheels just to install the sensors.

Any input would be greatly appreciated! :icon16:

You can take the truck to a dealer and they can program the ECM to disable the TPM feature. Depending on the dealer, and your relationship with them, it can cost anywhere from $0-$120 bucks.

And you have to have it enabled in after you put the TPMs back in. (With another dealer service charge)

The tire shop should only charge about $5-$10 bucks a tire or so to install them. The tires don't have to be completely dismounted from the wheels. They just have to remove the wheels from the truck, break the bead, remove the valve stems, install the TPMs, re-inflate them, balance them, and put back on the truck.

You'll then have to calibrate each wheel to it's position on the car. Instructions for this are on page 5-72 to 5-74 in your owner's manual.

When I changed wheels on my '04 'Hoe, I made sure they went back to the same position on the car the stock ones came off of, so I didn't have to hassle with the calibration.

Thanks for the info...I appreciate it. Just shows how some dealers just totally make stuff up! My local dealer told me that there was no way to disable the TPM. He implied that it could effect other parts of the vehicle!!

In fact, they were not even sure that they had the proper tool to program the vehicle. They found it in it's original box without the batteries even put in the tool yet!!

I think it may be time to visit a different dealer!!

Thanks again!

Just want to thank Boatcop for his info...It was right on the money..!
I just changed the rims and tires on my '04 Z71 and had no problem with
the tire monitor system when I reinstalled the sensors on the new rims and kept them at their original positions on the truck.

Thanks Again..

Glad to help. Just remember that when you rotate the tires, they'll have to be re-programmed.

I think I'll check with my local dealer and see if they'll do it for free if I have them do the regular service.

Heck. It's worth asking.
