1990 sedan exhaust options

Good Evening AF members,
I own a 1990 EX sedan with a 1.5 litre 105hp D15B7 engine from a 92-95 Civic. the engine is tight and runs flawlessly, and I have put a K&N replacement filter in it. The Exhaust has rusted away beyond the flange near the rear suspension linkage, so I need a exhuast that flows more freely than the stock to do the peppy engine some justice. I am also on a budget. Here is what I propose:
To buy a OEM muffler (twin tailpipe) assembly for a 1990 CRX and bolt it on from the flange, hopefully using the original hangers (they seem to be in the same place), and then extending the two tailpipes so they make the distance and stick out just past the rear bumper.
Any one done this mod?
Will it flow better than a sedan OEM muffler?
Is their any other cheap options out there?
thanx,
Damo.

hey :) welcome to the boards! I also own a 1990 4-door EX, but i still have the stock D16A6 that came with it.
I've asked the same question myself about the exhaust, because on mine all the piping past the muffler is all rusted out. Lots of people have suggested to go to a muffler shop and get it custom made. 2.5 inches diamater with mandrel bent piping i heard is the way to go, with resonator and some other things. Just search for exhaust and you'll find the thread.
That thermal catback is $500 bux, a lil more than i'd spend on an exhaust system. Probably gives hella performance, but thats still a lot of money. In October imma run down to Midas and ask em how much the custom option is and what they recommend, cuz i want something that lets the engine breathe better but is nice n quiet.
The CRX thing sounds like too much trouble. I'd stick with an aftermarket muffler, because it'd flow and sound much better.

i cant decide whether i want to get the thermal r+d sedan exhaust or the thermal r+d 3" turbo exhaust for the hatch. Mostly bc i dont know if i want to go turbo or not, but i love the sound of boost and a blow off valve.

just get the turbo one just in case - cuz its gonna suck if you DO get a turbo down the road and ur stuck with an exhaust thats not made for it

i would love a pro system, but I don't have a lazy $500 hanging around!.
I think the pipe that goes from the cat to the flange just before the rear suspension linkage (the centre pipe or 'b' pipe) is 2.25inch of the cat and then reduces to 2inch by the time it gets to the flange. maybe get a generic 2inch muffler and have some 2inch pipe made to go between the flange and the muffler and the muffler to the rear bumper. What sought of dollars (canadian) do you think would cost if I supplied the muffler?

no idea, see i'm a newbie so i bring my car to shops lol
i'm good with interior n stuff, but when it comes to this i'm so...grrness! *beep beep beep*
We should all cut off our exhaust from the catback and all complain to honda at once that they gave us crappy exhaust and then the people that work at honda can make it a recall and then tell the shops that they should only replace the honda oem exhaust with the thermal cat back aftermarket $500 for free, then we'd ALL be hooked up, hell yea!

I did a similar setup thispat weekend on a CRX. Cat back with 2.25 pipe. 225.00 which included a high flow cat, resonator, proper bends, utilized the factory hangars. I supplied a magnaflow muffler. I could tell an immediate improvement in throttle response, and the car felt peppier. It's much better than the wimpy 1.5L factory exhasut that I did have.

I went to a local muffler shop. I first shopped around. All the shops were comparable in price. The one I went to was just closer to my house. I would recommend asking your local performance shop folks for a muffler shop. Once you get the name of a place go to it and tell them "your shop name" sne t you to them. They will usually cut you a good deal. Also, make sure the shop doesn't leave your muffler hanging too low. It will be subjected to more road hazards.

This is your best bet. It may even be cheaper depending on what shop does it. I may redo mine like this so the mrs. don't complain no more, but as the weather cools down my exhaust has been sounding way more awesome and the car runs great!

sorry to jack the thread but i have a small question about 4g4d's, i found a 1991 Sedan for $200, and plan on buying it. It has power windows, cruise control, and auto trans w/ tach. So im assuming is an EX. I checked the chassis code for sedans and
EX = ED4
LX = ED3
on the car, the VIN says ED3. I havent popped the hood, so i dont know if it has a d16 or d15 yet. Where power windows, cruise control, and tach available on LX, is this car an EX?
Im in Canada if that makes a difference.

aluminized steel works well... under the car, my mid-piping still looks brand new

I think i figured out what was going on. Im in Canada and our top of the line Sedan is the LX, its equivilent to the US EX. the base sedan here is DX. So the VIN would be correct and it should have the d16. I asked my friend who works at the dealership and he said power options were not available on the DX

only thing power on the DX are the brakes, the LX and Ex both had power everything and the only difference as far as i know was the engine and tranny. The EX is basically an SI sedan. I would pop the hood just incase though, and the quickest way to tell is just look at the intake manifold, dpfi for LX and MPFI for EX. Or check the engine code.

Oh yeah and for $200 who cares what it is as long as it has all the parts and runs.

Yeah im going to buy it either way. But also, in Canada i dont think there was an EX sedan, i think the canadian LX is the same as the US EX, therefore a "four door" si.
