You might want to put that money into the rest of your valves. With that cam you might need to upgrade springs, which would run about that much. If you don't I would say timing and fuel, it all depends on how hot the grind of the cam will be. I heard the Apex'i V-afc is a nice buy after installing new valve train.

Keep it stock. No amount of money will make you completely content with an n/a sohc Civic. Period.
If you want a fast n/a car, buy a Mustang, not a 127hp fwd Civic. I've been down the modded Honda path and it's all a big fucking expensive joke.

A modded honda can be fast cheap though 14 sec car for 3G isn't hard.
True as far as other cars having greater potentail but i'm damned happy with my lil honda tearing it up in teh twistys and autoX.
new project is something ALOT meaner but its on the D/L just be sruccd

Ricochet alot of people would kill for a b16b, admittly most of them are riced out honda fan boys, but its still a sweet car.
I'm sure if you kept repeating "JDM engine" over and over again to someone you would be able to get most of the money you put into it back.

I would have to agree that a mustang is better in all but think of it this way. You could be like everyone else and buy a car made fast. OR you could buy some car that people just hate, and think little of and make it your own. Its the idea that you put your time and money into something that stands out.
Plus on the strip of course the mustang would win over a stock d16, but on the course I've even beating some cars that I would have never thought possible. Not everything is 1/4, theres also handling that also plays a role in preformance cars.

I was ready to kill for one until I ran a wimpy 14.9 in the 1/4.. It's a great motor, not for $4,000 though. for that amount and $2,000 more I could have bought a local guy's '95 Z28 and be running 12's

I don't mean to be rude or anything honestly. But could the expensive part be because you bought a CTR engine? Anyone I know who bought that motor did it just to say that they had the motor; bragging rights. I mean it has 5hp more than the JDM GS-R motor yet 9 less tq, and it's $700+ more expensive. I mean I understand what you're saying about the mustang and the stock civic engines being worthless, and RWD clearly has the advantage (since a FWD car can't get past 8's in the ¼). But just because you bought a motor that didn't live up to your expectations doesn't mean that a N/A Civic can't be fast. I don't know of many N/A RWD American car from the past decade that are faster than a Civic H22a or Civic ITR hybrid. I'm sure most people who buy Civics and try to make them faster could have just saved their $ and bought another car and made it faster, but half the fun is doing the work yourself. And if we lived in Japan we'd have an easier and cheaper time getting engines for our civics, much like it's easy for the musclecar guys who can get a 350 or whatnot like they're a dime a dozen. I just don't think you should push your attitude on others just because you weren't satisfied. It just seems that all you do here is complain about mustangs being better and Civics are money pit piece of shit. I'm sorry that you feel the way you do but unfortunately most people here don't agree with your negativity. Again, I'm not trying to be a dick or anything.

Not too many other people on here have quick Civics to agree with me. Even an ls/turbo swap with extra parts and dynotuning time will cost a huge chunk of change, and will doubtfully see 12's. Know why I dog Civics more and more? It's because I've driven Z28's, Mustangs, T/A's, blah blah blah and they are much more fun to drive, and cheaper to mod. Maybe it's just because I'm getting older (almost 26) but I don't care about "bragging rights" anymore, just power.. and a Honda Civic is not the smartest way to achieve that.
I'm not being negative, I'm being realistic and trying to help kids out before they make the same expensive mistakes I have. A Civic is a Civic, meant for taking the kids to school and picking up eggs and milk. Having to buy $150 metal tubes and $500 tin cans for 5hp does not sound like a fantastic deal to me anymore.. how bout you? Or how about $3,000 for a turbo and accessories to get to 200-250hp, where that same amount nets a V8 400+hp? I'm just tired of squeezing out a handful of horsepower from a 1.6 liter engine when I could be adding inexpensive 20-30hp mods to a real sports car..
Here is a post from a buddy on my local board, www.columbusracing.com
He has an '03 Cobra.. do the math.
Here's mine with a CAI, chip, pulley and CB.

And i do remember suggesting not to get that motor a LONG TIME AGO when posted if you should get the ctr. I hate 1.6 motors! I had a full b16a swap. Then i switched the b16a shortblock with ITR shortblock with ctr pistons running high 13s with that set up. CTR is not worth it, especially a 1.6! I didn't think you would go through with it but i guess you did. Another thing is that you're comparing these v8's with civics. Sure stock for stock civics are no match but as we all know...20-32g's for a cobra , ws6 , SS etc... can be thrown into a civic and run faster! I bet you anything it doesn't take 7-9g's just to see the 11s on either N/A or Turbo. My boy has a 2002 ws6 and hes getting rid of it for a that Scion TC. He just wants to go 4 cycl. Hes not into that racing crap. Just wants style and better gas mileage. And 14.9 is all you did? You should see mid 14's with the right suspension.

I have stock suspension and that time was ran on crappy steelies. I have better wheels/tires now and should see mid 14's but I haven't tried with them yet.
The reason I bought the ctr motor is because I had a blown sohc and I wanted a good engine that would keep me happy for a while without nitrous. I checked around and I didn't want a b16a like everybody else, and the ctr seemed like the best exotic motor choice for the money and ease of install. My parents got a loan in their name (through my bank account though, I pay for it) and it's not like they would be alright with me getting an ls/turbo or something after me blowing up two other engines. If I had the money and a second car, I would have bought a c5 or something wild like said above, an ls/turbo.

They cost $6,000 from www.inlinefour.com, where my engine was only $4,000. i4 is the only site I trust to buy a Honda engine from, and couldn't bring myself to pay two grand more for 15 more hp..

Its just not 15hp more. 133tq vs 118 lbs of tq. I think i'd go with the 133. It makes a big difference.

Yeah well I needed one asap because I didn't have a car, and I did try locally but came up empty. In a nutshell, the b16b was my only option besides another $150 sohc.

Well now you can atleast get yourself a ITR shortblock and just slap on the remaining parts. Got yoursefl a 1.8 ltr motor :)

Str8 bolt on. :) I wouldn't spend more than 1300 on it though. Gsr shorblock would a good choice. Basically the samething except cheaper. I wouldn't pay more than 800 for one.

Doesn't really matter. Type R heads have much better airflow than anyother heads. Its also mildly port and polished.

so i'm the only one on the planet happy with my d-series as it is?
I've driven vettes and cobras (mid-90s models, probably the worst of their breed, to be fair); after paying for the gas, insurance, and the fucking trouble that you get into; I'm glad I have my civic.
Sure, if you had either of those, and you dropped the same amount of cash into them, you would have ridiculous amounts of horsepower...but what are you going to do with all that horsepower? Drive it, really quickly, in a straight line, for 1/4 of a mile?? Where do you go from there, to funny-cars? I'm obviously missing something here because I was under the impression that you build import engines because you love import engines. If all you want, is to go as fast as possible, screw getting any car, and get on a bike (600cc or liter-bike).
If you live in places like Tx, I can understand the frustration - the whole state is one flat wasteland; driving those high-hp cars was fun when I lived in Tx, but I know that if i had either car here (CA), regardless of the suspension modifications i made to them, I would spend my time slipping and sliding around the mountain roads.
After all that though, I would have to agree, that trying to get a 1.6l engine, to become some kind of drag-strip monster, seems like a joke...if its not for the love of your brand/engine, then I don't understand why you guys do it.
What isn't a joke, is how much you all know about these engines, and that's a direct result of the time you've 'wasted' building these things.
Congratulations on your car, seriously.
Sorry to rant, I just figured that it was applicable to the 'why build up a d-series' question...

YOU ARE MY GOD!!! Actually not really but I couldn't have said that any better myself. I live up here in Mn and theres a few straight roads but they get old quickly. I love working on my car and making it faster quicker just for the fact that people says its not worth it. I've shown a few people that it is worth it, and they have ever since show the civics more respect.
