tire and suspension question

I have 285/75/16's on my 2500 HD, 6.0L. I have a 4:10 rear end.

I figured that my rear axle ratio is now 3:80 with the extra tire height from the stock 245's.

I want to add some additional height to my truck with out sacrificing acceleration. If I increase my tire height will I get better acceleration?

Thanks,

Increasing tire height (larger tires) with decrease your acceleration. Because you are having to turn a larger circumfrance around. The smaller the tire, the quicker the revolutions and the quicker the git 'n' go.

I know there's probably a little more to it and a better way of explaining it but I do know this is on the right track.

jeep is right. larger tire, slower acceleration. But larger tire = higher top out speed. If you want to increase your height more, you may want to look into a lift kit instead of taller tires.

oh, don't forget, with larger tires, not only will it effect acceleration but it will also throw off your speedometer, tripometer. Speedo will read 60 while your actually going 63. Odometer/tripometer will count mileage slower (could be seen as a benefit ;-)
Hope this helps

My speedo was off from the factory with 265.75R16s. It said I was going faster than I was(and thus further). At 50k miles I got 285s and now it is perfectly accurate(according to GPS and those little radar trailers). I was thinking the other day that I really got cheated out of a few thousand miles of warranty. Probably only a couple though. I just did my first oil change since the new tires and realized that it took a lot longer than before to rack up 3000 miles. oh well.

Thanks all for such fantastic responses.
I'm gonna stay with my 285's. The dealer put them on when I purchased my truck as part of the sale. They recalibrated the speedometer.

I'm, still looking for a little more "lift". I don't really want to go the route of a suspension lift as my dealer said it could void some warrantee parts.

With a body lift there will be less to be concerned with a/b warrantee and expense.

Does any one have any suggestions on body lift kits?

What should I be looking for and be careful about?
I only want to go 1-2".

What about Sway Bars? Should I install this after the body lift kit, or doe it not matter?

Thanks again,

I would say no to a body lift. THey leave unsightly gaps and such. You can get a kit off of ebay that uses different torsion keys to lift the front end 2" or so, and you can also get an add-a-leaf to get the rear to where you want it. Just check e-bay out.

A big thanks Jeverett.
Any input on sway bars?
Hey, you have a nice looking truck there.

Is the K & N FIPK one of the Air systems I've heard about? Do you like it, and what do you think your HP gain was?

I'm not so sure on the sway bars, but I would think that your truck came factory with some, so they should be sufficent.
And yes, the K&N is one of the cold air induction systems on the market, and I love it! I wouldn't even know where to think how much HP I got, but I could tell a difference in power and gas mileage. Oh yeah, thanks for the compliment! :)

Jayson,
I followed your advice and checked out e-bay.
I saw a "Suspension lift Kit" by Victoria Performance that claims a economical 2" lift by changing the keyways and receiving socket for the torson bar suspension on the front end.
This might be just what I'm looking for as I do get slight wheel rub with my 285's.
Do you think this kit will cause any early part wear like the CV joints etc.?

This company also recommended using a "block" in the rear to raise it proportionately to the front.

I don't think you would have any problems with the CV joints. I've had my torsion bars cranked for..ever and haven't had any problems. I know a few people who use the kit and love it, so couldn't hurt to give it a shot.

I just saw a set of springs on ebay that provide 2.5" lift for about $100 with shipping. I'm going that route.
