Noob Situation

I recently purchased an 89 240sx without a tranny. I was planning on swapping an SR20DET in it but I'm not really sure anymore. It's just that the car is automatic, and I don't think that's nice. I bought the car because I thought it was a good deal, but now I'm considering selling it. How much trouble would it be to change it to a manual transmission, and how much money would it take? Do you think it is worth the work and money, or should I just sell it and get a 240 with a manual transmission? Thanks, any help would be great.

there are lots of other things that factor into this...

you can get the SR in auto or manual but most guys will go with manual (auto will give you more disadvantage than advantage over manual).. its almost common sense with that type of engine.. personally, i don't understand why anybody would buy a car and mod it as an automatic unless you've got a high hp dragster cause they're ridiculous off the line.. plus, manual is much more fun to drive.. thats just my :2cents: i feel like i have more control driving manual..

anyways, back to your question.. with the money you spend on a tranny swap, you would almost have a complete SR20.. of course, you wouldn't be all the way there but if you want an SR20 then do it.. just make sure that the SR is the engine for you.. decide what kind of driving you want to do and then pick your engine accordingly.. you've got quite the spectrum of engines but then the price is a factor.. doing this swap should take some serious thinking.. do it right.. i'm no expert but thats what i suggest..

If a friend of mine is considering buying an automatic 240 and swaping a sr20, how much more would it be to make it standard, this is assuming he buys an sr20 manual.

you can always buy a automatic sr20...if you are going to do the manual conversion, I would suggest to do the right hand conversion as well since you are going to have to cut and weld the other firewall, or you can just cut holes for the clutch. Heavythrottle had a write up about it and they said it was easier than people think. If you did the work yourself, you would save a lot.

Well I bought the car for only 400 dollars. No rust, no dings. It hasn't been crashed. Almost immaculate, except for the rock chips on the lower front bumper. The engine has 200,000 miles though. My budget is around 5k.

what you can do is ride the 240 with the Auto tranny and buy the SR20. it comes with a manual.

^^ however you would have to install the clutch and harness for the clutch which would require you to cut the firewall and run the piping to the slave cylinder. Good luck with it.

So far I spent 3K on parts to put my SR in and have about $600 more to go
Thats before ordering the motorset.

But if you want to be cheap, and just buy the motorset, you could do it with about 600 worth of parts. Differece is how long you expect it to last and what quality parts you are using.
