89 electrical problems

Heres the issue: Jeep starts runs works fine mechanically. When it's running, the voltage shows high around 16 volts. Turn on my fan, lights or anything else that takes a serious draw, the voltage drops. The signal lights don't work well along with some guages. It seems like I don't have enough juice to run them properly. Is this a ground issue or something else. Is the internal regulator gone in my alternator. I don't have battery problems, not being charged etc. so I'm not thinking the alternator. Electrical.....................enough said.

Some voltage drop is normal whenyou turn on hight load devices (a/c, headligts, etc.). How much is it dropping?

Have you checked your fuses?

Mine is quite a bit of a drop. It is high to start with, around 16-17 which isn't right, but it will drop around 4 volts and sometimes the radio cuts out for a second when switching on some other accessories. I've checked all the fuses I can find, but should look some more I guess. Would a blown fuse cause this???

First, I'd get a good voltmeter and double check those voltages. I can turn on everything in my jeep and the dash voltmeter never gets below what appears to be about 9-10 volts at idle. It peaks about 14 or so. It's possible the regulator is shot.

No help here other than ruling out the altenator
my 89 has the exact same symptoms and I already replaced my alty, as well as brand new dual gel cell batteries
doesnt happen every day or the entire length of a trip
but when it does the turn signals dont work and the fan drops and the headlights are dim. Currently thinking it may be a bad headlight switch as it seems to happen more frequently at night.
When I do find the problem I will be sure to post the solution for all the other 89 owners :)

My 1989 jeep cherokee has the same problem also. The Blinkers don't work right. They work sometimes and then they don't hardly work at all.

My voltage also drops. It will go anywhere between 9 and 14 volts.

Did any of you guys figure out the problem?

Hi I am new here I have an 89 cherokee pioneer when I had that problem with my light it was a wire on the back of my alt I put a new connector on and it works fine. Hope it helps.
