88 Trooper won't start when hot

Once my trooper warms up, if I shut it off for a couple of moment 50% of the time it won't restart unless it sits for 1/2 an hour to cool down. Then it starts and runs great. It runs fine if you don't shut it off, maybe a little hard on gas but it needs a tune up.

any suggestions

bendex in the starter gets hot being next to the block and is expanding causing it to sieze till it cools down and shrinks back. parts are worn and aloows more movement inside of the bendix expanding, just a guess. mine does it too.

I have a 1990 Trooper that is experiencing a similar problem. However, mine is for sure no fuel. The fuel pump has been replaced and thought it was fixed but was not. When it starts it will run until shut down and then may or may not restart. If you have any ideas or if you have yours fixed please let me know.

Heat builds resistance check the condition of the cables going to starter battery. Look for corrosion at cable ends.

I had the same problem on my 1988 trooper. after many hours of playing, I found that there were two relays for the fuel pump. One relay powers the fuel pump when the key is in the START position. After the engine starts and you release the key, one relay contacts open and another relay contact set closes to power the fuel pump while driving. I found the coil on the "start relay" would heat up and open. It would not work again until it cooled down. As long as I kept driving I had no problems. It was only when trying to restart.
