well everyone ive decided to build a 383 stroker this winter but i have a few questions before i start this project, i plan on pushing out huge amounts of power for a while just to break in the engine im hoping to hit the 500 hp at the wheels range on N/A but then im going to either just plain s/c it or put a blower on i can;t decide yet but i know once i do that my power range is going to be massive so i need to find a rear end that can handle that much power and a tranny, for the tranny i can;t decide if i wanna get a built up TH350 or a borg warner t56 so some input would be greatly appriciated. also has anyone delt with http://www.strokerkits.com/build_your_own_383.htm i was thinking of using them for the stroker kit with dart aluminum heads along with their race ready blocks or competition blocks i don;t even care about emitions my car will be 20 years old soon so i won;t have to worry about it considering once this is don;t its only comming out of the garadge once or twice a week
Thanks, Jon

ok, first things first, get realistic. not to be a dick, but your not gonna be able to build a 600hp 383 Naturally asperated, and then be able to throw a supercharger or a turbo on it without it grenaiding into lots of little peices. besides once you have 600hp why would you want more for a daily driver???? if its gonna be a race car than i can understand. In any case, the reason for this is that to get that much power out of a 383 naturally asperated you will have to run high compression and a certain cam profile, to run any power adder that works through pressurizing the intake charge, you have to run lower compression, say 8.5 or 9 :1. youll be running at least 10.5 and maybe 11 :1 to get 600hp out of a NA 383. and superchargers and turbos like different cam specks, i reccomend emailing compcams a qustion and have them elaborate. you have to pick which direction the engine is going to take and then follow that idea.
for the transmission, a th350 is a very good choice, a T56 is also a good tranny, but i would definatly spend the money to get the Viper level tranny and avoid any and all boneyard trannies like the plauge.
rear end, methinks your only option is a moser 12 bolt mod or a ford 9in rear, the factory 10 bolts just wont survive under that kinda power. if you have a 9 bolt rear i have heard of them surviving behind 500hp big blocks but your looking to go quite a bit past that number.

the baseline moser (30-spline axles, posi, standard forged yoke, richmond gears) will handle up to 600 lb-ft of torque at the flywheel (with 3.73 gears, goes up with 3.42). couple hundred bucks more to go up to 31-splines and you can go up to 700 lb-ft...

th350 tranny is good, but i cant see that to handle that much horse power, i would go with a th400, cant they handle more

Liek 89IROC said you can't build a stroker SB to make 600HP N/A and then throw any power adder on it after to make more. The block would have to be torn apart and all new internals for high psi set-up would be needed. Basically you need to chose N/A or power adder route before you start building this motor when your goal is 600+hp out of a SB.
Also S/C or turbo is your best way to go to get 600hp out of a SB and keep the best street manners.
Rear-end built 12-bolt or Ford 9, from Moser, Strange, etc.., will do.

If you plan on driving the car alot forget about the 3 spd automatic. Definately go with the T56 or atleast a 4 speed automatic.
For rearend I would go with a ford 8.8. Theres a guy up here in ontario that makes them to bolt right into 3rdgens and they are much quieter than a 12 bolt or 9 inch, as strong as a 12 bolt, and have less parasitic losses than both also.

ok well what am i looking at n/a around 450? because i wanna break the shit in before i supercharge it either that or just build the motor and then save up for money and slap on the supercharger and then drop it in the car. also its not going to be a daily driver anymore more like a weekend car considering im gonna have my POS winter car to rock in the rain and hopefully a bike when its sunny out

basicly what i would say is your 383 is gonna be a torque monster naturally asperated. aim for a 9:1 compression, 400hp, and probly 500lbs/ft of torque. then supercharge it and youll easily get 600hp and with the right tuning you could get more.

well i know a blower puts down more power than a reg supercharger right and i think im prolly gonna go with the t56 b/c i miss driving stick prolly gonna add in a 10 point roll cage since i know ima need it at the tracks

look into the forged kits summit has.... they can handle the the s/c's nitrous and turbos... the rotating assembly alone costs around 2000...im dropping mine in turbo and all....along with a t56

b4 you really start to plan all this out you better make a budget cause your gunna get out of hand and not beable to aford it you gota figure on machine work , your technical skills ,and the purpose

what ever you think its going to cost double it!!! i have built three 383 LT1's, one 383 LS1 and all of them came out double what we thought they would cost... but have fun with it becuase the power after its all said and done is great!!!

I have been pondering a S/C or blower on my car. After I get the shipping and transmission deal done with it, would a blower help it, or be good even? I just think it would look good with the four plenum deals sticking out of the hood and all. Plus I can't really find any on the web for the LT1 that it has in it, anyone know a good site or anything? I don't want a 3 foot tall dingy sticking out of it, but like a low profile one that just sucks in some extra air would be cool. Any ideas on it, or the cutting that I would have to do on the hood, or where hoods that have the cut made already or anything?

look into the vortechs and the pro chargers.. they can be mounted under your stock hood
