1989 maxima speedometer

my speedo quit working the cable is inactive is this a common loss and ifso is it the cable or is it the sending unit/gear in the tranny please reply

check the gear and make sure that the teeth are still on it and then disconnect the cable have someine watch it spin the cable and see if the speedo works
