belts, pulleys, etc...

ive got a 99 gs, ive replaced the belts on it 3 times and for some reason one keeps ripping. at first a part of it peels off and then the rest of it rips up. it has never gotten bad enough to where the belt came apart but bad enough to be replaced. i have made sure my pulleys and stuff are tight enough and what not but im running out of ideas and i dont know what to do. anyone got any advice? last time it ripped was just the other day and it was while i was in high rpms, are there higher quality belts other than the ones that like autozone or a parts store carries?

Many people claim dealership parts are better; for something as simple as a belt, it doesn't seem like there should be that much of a difference. Check your pulleys for any sharpness and make certain that your belts are firmly seated in teh pulleys' ruts.

there ARE differences in belt quality. I got a cross-thatched grip aftermarket pattern on my 97 turbo, they started to slip and burn on the pulleys. Put OEMs back on, not a single squeak, nothing, silk smooth....so yeah, try the OEMs.

I am guessing that you are talking about the power steering belt. I have been though two in the last year. There is a TSB out on it and the parts cost about 150+, not worth it IMO. I just went out and bought a lifetime warranty bely from murray's

Make sure that the pulleys are square with each other... When I first got my car the steering pump was out of line and caused the belt to shift to one side and it pretty much started to take off one rib at a time... If not that problem... ?dunno

Do you have any mods like an UDP? Because if you do make sure it has the same amount of grooves as all your other accessories

Ashah and Spyder mentioned what I am thinking about. I know the turbo cars have a TSB on accessory belt misalignment, and I believe the NTs do to (ashah backs this up from the sound of it). For the turbo cars you can often jsut shim up the offending accesory.

Kevin what do you mean "you can just shim up the offending accesory".. maybe i can try to see if it works on the NT

I havent read the TSB in a long time. But depending on which way it has to move you can move the mounting brackets accordingly, or move the pulley out. You'll have to see if you can figure out which way the pulley/accessory has to move, then find a way to do it.
