I just replaced a bad ignition switch because my 95 Cherokee would start but immediately stall. It now starts and stays running, but will not shift out of "park". I may have put the cylindar/switch back in incorrectly (I have to push the key in awkwardly in order to be able to turn it to start), but it really only seems to fit in there one way.
Also--I noticed before the switch went bad--the car has a whiney, whinnying shriek when the car is in a low gear, that lasts just until I rev the engine a little, then comes back occassionally, again while driving slowly in low gear. The serpentine belt was just replaced and belt dressing applied, so I don't think that's the problem (although it does sound to me like a bad belt). Any ideas?

There is a small pushbutton style switch on the brake pedal that keeps the shifter locked until you press the brake pedal. You likely moved it when you changed the ign switch.
