I'm beginning to think the ujoints in my '89 beater r getting loose - what mileage have others found they got b4 needing replacement, and what was symptoms?

Around 170K miles. Get all tension off the drive train and crawl under the truck and try to turn/wiggle the shaft. Any looseness and they are ready. Or if you hear a squeeking noise at low speeds that could be a sign.

If you get a rather loud CLUNK when going from drive to reverse is one symptom.
