Ignition key problem

I bought my 99 grand prix gtp used. When i bought they gave me the original key to the vehicle that says GM on it. The key works to start the car, open the trunk, and it also opens the trunk access from the back seat. Problem is it doesnt work in either of the doors WTF?? They also gave me the original key fob which works fine. So the remote lock is the only way i can enter my vehicle if it locked. Am i missing something here i thought these cars only had one main key that unlocked everything? If anyone has any advice let me know. Thanks

Your pontiac key has a small security chip in it that contains anti-theft features... problem is that sometimes over time the key becomes worn down or possessed by demons and doesn't want to work for you. If it starts your car and opens the trunk, but doesn't open the door it seems like maybe you might need to have the door checked, not the key? Or I seem to recall reading somewhere about the programming needed to be redone for other people. Either way it's definitely a dealership issue - so go to them

not working in either door is bizarre, especially since it works in the trunk and the ignition. I don't know of any type of resistor in the door locks, so I agree with Dober, it's time for a trip to the dealer

Have you tried calling the seller and asking them if they have additional keys? One key should open all.

I had that problem with my grand prix, but with one door. When they took the door panel off, the "thing" that controls the lock was off it's hook I will call it, because I don't know the names of the parts. Anyway it might be that, but I dunno why it would be with both doors unless the owner before you did something in the door and forgot to put those back on right.

Thanks for the tips guys. I really dont want to take it to the dealer if i dont have to they tend to charge an arm and a leg for shaking their hand. I guess all i can do is take the door panels off and investigate. Big L i could really use your 2 cents on this one. By the way whats the easiest way to get the door panels off?

These doors are a pain when you're not sure what you're doing. Shooter be careful, I was messing around in there and managed to cut my arm pretty badly and completely unexpectedly - just a warning from someone who learned the hard way!

Thanks Dober. Hope you were ok. I know what yer saying that sharp sheet metal can be a pain. Hopefully it doesnt resort to that if i can find an answer elswhere.

Just came back from the body shop, they have to redo one door on the GTX.
Asked them about your car. THEY said sounds like doors where replaced and not rekeyed. Their advice is to take it to locksmith and rekey.
If that's the case (who knows) why where doors replaced? Did you run a Car Fax on the car?
Boy I sound like the guy in the funnies with the cloud over his head.

Thanks alot guys. Looks like im gonna have to break down and just take it to the dealership (I hate going there) and see whats up. Big L what i meant by the 2 cents thing is i needed your advice because 9 out of 10 times u have an answer to solve the problem. Im going to run a carfax on my car and see if the doors have ever been replaced because of an accident or soemthing. Thanks for all the help

Another possible is just the lock mechanism was replaced in both doors if the previous owner lost his keys. Except you would think if he lost the key the remote would have gone with it in which case changing the locks would do not good. The valet key opens the door and starts the car only I think. No trunk access.

Big-L,
As I wrote you today. I have two cars that came with the GTX. Both work everything. Went to stroage and checked the GTP. Samething. They both open everything.
Maybe I lucked out and someone blow it. That would be a first.
