Novice Question P71, P72...ect

I have a 1997 Police Interceptor, that I just bought a week ago. My VIN# contains the letter and numbers P71. I am assuming I have a P71 car! My question is what does P71 stand for, and what is the difference between P71 and the other P** cars? I love the car, but don't know much about what I really have here. All I know is it is an ex- Sheriff's car used in Idaho. I have no manual to reference by either! The car is painted blue, but the inside trunk lid is white. Can anyone shed some light on this subject for me?

There are various "Pxx" cars... from P70-74.

Your car is a true "P71", shich is a Police Interceptor model. There are many options, and standard equipment not available on other "Pxx" models.

I would take, oh, a page to list every little item that's "upgraded" for the P71 over a civilian model.

The biggies are: Engine oil cooler, higher shift points, dual exhaust, revised engine programming, heavier frame, selected lower gearing, speed rated tires, full body electrical bonding, RF shielding, police option wiring, "ticket light", spot light(s), recovery aids, HD springs and shocks. There are literally dozens of other more obscure items as well.

P72 = Panther, Livery (police/taxi/fleet spec), '92^
P73 = Panther, base Crown Victoria, '92^
P74 = Panther, Crown Victoria, LX. '92^

The 88 thru 91 model Crown Vic "Police Package" was in Fact a P72.....The 92 Model Police package was a P72 as well. In 1993 the Term Police Interceptor was Coined and this is the point were the Vin Code P71 was born....The 1993 Model Year P72 was The Bulk Fleet sale Vin.....mainly dedicated to large volume Taxi Cab sales
