radio

Hello All~
I'm new here, and have a question. *Go figure!* Anyway, I have a '92 88 and the radio doesn't work anymore. All I get is static. I figured I'd just buy a new head unit to get a CD player and everything, but I can't get the old factory AM/FM cassette out to wire up my new one. What's the deal? Thanks!

What problem are you haveing getting the radio out?? i've got a 92 88 and i've got the radio out every other week

Well, when the radio stopped working, I tried to get it out to check the wire connections, but I couldn't get it out. I couldn't tell if the 'hood' part of the dash was in the way or if the wires hooking up the radio were too tight to allow me to pull it out. Either way, I can't get the original radio out, and therefore can't get at the wires to hook up the new head unit. Does this make any sense?

To replace the radio, you need to take out the dashboard panel. (Warning - the following is from memory.) It is bolted in under the lip of the panel, about 8 bolts (roughly) across the panel, and a couple from underneath (passenger side?). There's one bolt that is a different size and is hard to get off - you don't have to take it off. There is also a bolt facing each door, and you'll have to open the door to access it. I also had to slide the boot around the steering column up a little in order to pry the panel out. After you've taken the panel off and on a couple of times, you can do it in less than 5 minutes.

Once it is off, four bolts hold the radio in to the frame, and you can see them from the front. Once they are out, you should be able to pull the radio out. Wal-Mart and others sell the wiring harness kit, which is worth getting because it has the antenna adapter. (Olds went with a smaller antenna plug, so it is not the standard size.) You may also want the mounting kit. (both for ~$20?)

Does your casette work? If so, your problem may be with the antenna itself, not the radio.

Also, check your speakers if replacing the radio. The best I could tell, they were 10 ohm, not 8 ohm speakers, so make sure your new radio will work with them. I'm sure there is better documentation online somewhere.

The problem i have with my radio is it keeps flipping sides of the tape every 3 secs. Whenever it doesn't do that it makes a robotish sound and sound only comes out of two speakers primarily.

Whenever it is flipping sides of the tape it sounds good butits so annoying having something stop every 3 secs.
