How Stupid is this? there is no such think as the most versitile sized sub...if you have room for an 8 you put in an 8 if you have room for an 18 you put in an 18...

i think its pretty relative, some 10 inch subs will outperform some 15 inch subs and vice-versa it really all depends on the sub and the application. maybe if you gave us a scenario we could be more help.

arnet 10's supposed to be more responsive then 12's and 15's, therefore better for rock and 15"s are better for rap and hard beats? thats just what i have heard. but in my opion go as big as possable, i just look at rms rating.

Well the thing is, the extra weight does slow down the acceleration of the cone for a given power input. The problem is that people don't think hard enough about that, they think that it accelerates slower so it must not play as fast, but they're thinking about it all wrong. Sure it accelerates slower, but it still turns around, stops, reacts to transients, etc in the same amount of time, it just can't move as far in this amount of time due to its slower acceleration. This is with all other things being equal though, all the maker has to do is soften up the suspension a bit and then it's exactly the same as a smaller version in its response, it just has more cone area and therefore more output. The side effect is the softer suspension increases the Vas and it makes the sub require a larger box.
If your friends ever call you ignorant or stupid because you tell them 15's are just as "fast" as 10's or 12's, just send them this link:
