Alright, this wasn't much of an encounter. But it was a 'skirmish' none-the-less.
A buddy and I just got done hanging out, so I was off cruising home. I was low on gas so I was doing just that, cruising. Even though I had the car set at 15psi...
As I was cruising doing my 45mph in 5th gear, turning something like 2300rpm. I cruise through a intersection and a Cop was sitting there, No problem I'm not breaking any laws but I figure I'll hold at this pace just incase.
A few minutes later, I see lights coming up on my left. Ahh, 98-02 Camaro I think to myself. As the Camaro cruises past I casually look over and check for badges, I see none. Check the rear end, I see no dual exhaust. Darn, a V6. Nevermind, Although I noticed by the sound of the exhaust I had instinctivly sped up slightly. So back off the gas and into my 45mph cruise.
Travel through a few lights more, get over to make a left turn down a 3 mile open stretch of road that has no place for cops to hide. This left turn lane has two lanes in which to choose from, I'm in the right lane waiting. Light turns green, As I'm rolling through I notice another set of '98-02 Camaro headlights come up on me in the left, left turn lane. Same color car too, Didn't you already pass me? I think. I look as we make the turn, we're side by side, and see the big black SS badge on the fender.
Interesting... very interesting. Rated at 325hp, dyno's usually around 310whp... sounds like a M6 car.. 3500lbs I ramble off the car specs to myself. Even though it's one of those cars you know the specs to, you still have to remind yourself what you're dealing with.
The entire length of this road, we're cruising 65-70mph. Neither one of us getting on it. Just cruising, pacing I suppose. Travel the entire length, go through the first signal. Keep cruising... Nothing. I had to get around a slower moving car so I slighty boosted infront of him, then back over to the right lane.
That might of caught his attention, the way Z moved.
Finally we catch a red light, we pull up. I had my window down. I look over not really trying to entice a race but just lookin over and admiring the Black on Black Fbody with chrome ZR-1 wheels. So pretty.
Light goes green, I take off somewhat normally and get about one car length ahead of him and I had a feeling he was going to play. I shift to 2nd and hold momentarily like I did with the Z06. And sure as shit he hits it from, in what I assume is 2nd gear for him as well and I hear his exhaust come to life and his tires break loose. I mash the gas, I wasn't near boost so it was slow to react he was about halfway past me.
Boost kicks in hard and I catch him by the end 2nd gear and roughly 60mph I was 2-3 car lengths ahead. I shift up to 3rd gear and let off the gas to slow down. He comes up next to me, I give him a thumbs up.
Look over at the gas gauge, It's way empty.
 "Whoa, we are bingo fuel... no time for a rematch." I said to myself. I did a quick heel-toe down to 2nd gear to catch the next light and made a right turn to return to home for the night.
Not exactly a all out brawl with a LS1 Camaro. But I had my fun, hope he did too. I think the problem with my car is the whole Sleeper factor. People don't expect it to be fast, which is the point. But when I reveal the cars potiential they loose interest and stop playing. I mean, we all know what sleepers are. And a sleeper is usually a sleeper for a reason, cause it's damn fast.
Bleh, one of these days. Somebody will bite for real.

I'm still waiting to hear you and someone else REALLY go at it though because I want to see what your car can REALLY do. No more games! Go get someone!
On a sidenote, are you stil looking to change the crusty gas tank or were the boost problems solved?

400-500hp? Not even close. You have to remember, those old Z's weigh damn near 2000lbs flat. He's got the sr20 swap, so i'm guessing he's pushing around 200whp. (depending on a couple things)

I'd also like to see some track times for that car, sounds pretty tough.
Seen a couple F-bodies this weekend where I race. One was a 98-02 Z28, def. modified, had a 400HP badge on the front fender; the other was a 98-02 WS6. The Z28 ran 5.40s in 330 ft, the WS6 ran 5.teens. You could probably subtract atleast a tenth from those times at any other track in the country too, lol, so they were pretty bad!

So what is your point? The car is old... And?
Old cars aren't allowed to go fast?
I've got a SR20DET swap, like a few have mentioned. From what I've gathered, 13-14psi is considered safe boost and a SR20DET can produce 230-250whp (around 260-270 crank hp) with what I assume are full bolt ons.
I've got just about all the bolt ons you can think of, and with the car being pretty light to begin with. It should be about 2200lbs now with driver.
And the Camaro is a good 1200lbs heavier than I am. SO... it's possible that I can keep up with it, if not go faster than it. But that is yet to be proven fully.
So... what are ya gettin at? :screwy:

I think your story is very believable, especially against a stock or lightly modded LS1. And in the race you described, I think you'd still out run a heavily modded one, just because every LS1 I've been in or seen never really gets going untill 3rd gear (although in this case, i don't think you'd been "just" keeping up with him, lol he probably would have been "just" keeping up with you).
I think in order for you to really find out what your car has is to take it to the track! Because there, you'll know that whatever you are racing against is giving it all they have.

Yeah, I know. Just lately I've been busy on the weekends... and trying to get all the bugs out of the car. Just haven't had the time to go.
I hope to go soon though. Although I've got to practice my launches, scared to break the halfshafts haha.
It's held up so far.

Right. Sounds like you just need to go to a test and tune session before you go and pay a bigger entry fee to actually race.
Those are just wonderful for setting up a car (and learning how to drive it!). And its really easy to tear someting up at the track too. I've seen several people break the drive shafts in stock/street cars (or race cars for that matter) due to track preperation.

First off, this thread is a few weeks old...please don't bring back old threads...2ndly, he's running in the 12s...everybody here knows the capabilities of the ls1, half of us own, drive, or race one on a daily basis...read the thread about him and the z06 for more specifics on his car before you blame the LS1 driver.

if you were in northern cali i'd say i can get a few turbo ls1's to run you :D ...either that or you could run treynor's Viper or Twin Turbo V12 benz or his wifes viper.. his wife's viper is all stock but his viper is damn near 1,300 hp.. the benz is stock at 604hp he ran it at the track last weekend on all stock tires and ran an 11.7... i would say his z06 would be a good match but he got beat by a lancer in the z06 but the z06 only runs 11s... but if you're running 12s or 11s that's great... you can smoke alot of cars on the street ;)

You do realize that its only his chassis that's, for lack of a better word, ancient right? That 200+hp motor comes out of a car that was made in the 90's.
And that "Ancient" chassis of his weighs about 1000lbs less than the Camaro.
Just because the car looks old, doesn't mean it can't be fast.
Did you even read the thread?

actually.. redneck if you ever drive upto cali around san fran lemme know i know a perfect match for you.. if you look at the pictures i've posted you will notice a LS1 with a red coated intake and where normal air lids go you will notice a metal air box there with a big tube piping... that is a black ATI Procharged WS6 :) pushes 502 rwhp i think that'd probally be a good match for you :)

First-off, before anything else, you need to know that we have learned to respect most cars here. It's usually the owners that fuck it up for the car.
So before you start acting like your shit don't stink, because you drive a certain car, or get all defensive about an inanimate object, because you happen to own one similar to it, back the fuck up, and simmer-down, because you ain't lasting here long.
Also, before you knock on Matt (who doesn't really need defending, as he can ban you himself if he wants), his nickname is RedNeck383, because he's a Chevy guy that was building a 383 into his Nova.
Again, this ain't LS1tech, or LS1.com. You can talk-up your LS1 over there all you want, or even in our very own Chevy forums, but please, please, keep the fucking drama out of here.

Oh you made the drama, alright. I escalated it. There's a difference.
The test of how you're going to be as a member is if you have the tact, and/or insight enough to make it go away.
And trust me when I say this: It ain't just me watching you, either. We have a good group of people in here, and I tend to listen to their opinion.

a word to the wise allthrottlenobottl. dont talk back to the people with all 10 stars. they are what are called "moderators." meaning they moderate the forms. meaning step out of line and you get an all expences paid vacation from AF... there was a little video posted on this form not too long ago, ill search for it and post it in the thread so you can watch it. and another thing, you can edit your posts. you dont have to make corrections or add to your previous statement by posting another reply. if you where here for 2 days you deff. should not be calling people by their nicknames which you do not understand (and myself untill carrrnuttt explained it). and calling him Mr. Jesus...i take offence to that because i am a christian and do belive in god and that jesus was our savior. keep religion bashing out of these fourms please. as for you thinking that a 200hp car wount spank a 320hp car. well lets put it this way, a super bike may only have 100-150HP but it weighs less than 800lbs. some as low as 500lbs...if a 500lb bike has 100hp every horse is only pulling 5lbs... so if the old Z has 240hp and weighs 2200 gross lbs....he is jsut under heach pony pulling 10lbs where as the LS1 may have 320hp but if he weighs 3400lbs he is a tad over each pony pulling 10lbs...there for the 240hp car will have the potential to beat the 3400lb car with proper gear ratios.

a word to the wise allthrottlenobottl. dont talk back to the people with all 10 stars. they are what are called "moderators." meaning they moderate the forms. meaning step out of line and you get an all expences paid vacation from AF... there was a little video posted on this form not too long ago, ill search for it and post it in the thread so you can watch it. and another thing, you can edit your posts. you dont have to make corrections or add to your previous statement by posting another reply. if you where here for 2 days you deff. should not be calling people by their nicknames which you do not understand (and myself untill carrrnuttt explained it). and calling him Mr.
He doesn't understand math,so it's all poinless to him. If you don't have a V8, you're nothing but a ricer, just like he called 80% of this forum rice.

first of all i called him mr. jesus bc i too am christain and take offense to him portraying himslef as jesus.
Secondly u forgot to factor in the weight of the driver in the cars, carnuut in car +500lbs if he has enough time to post that much=2700 lbs 240hp
vs 3400lbs 320hp hahahahhahahahhahahhahahhahahhahhahahhahahhaha

mmhmmm, lets speak of a CRX with a B18c....the kids a JDM whore just as you are a form whore, but he'd give an LS1 a run for its money, 1800lbs ad 190 whp is quite potent... or maybe an RX-7 with 250Hp weighing 2100lbs. also a good run for the LS1.

those cars could give me a run for my money if they stole my money and i had to chase them down and beat their ass
interesting however thats no what i asked, if those cars arent ricer's what the hell are they, am i wrong to say that something that is red is red, if you wouldnt call a stealth a ricer what the hell would you call it certainly not a muscle car

So there is "muscle car" and there is "ricer" everything in between doesn't exist. Good point. I rest my case.

Well I have a vr4...the Mitsu equivalent of the Stealth RT/TT, and I am happy to inform you my car does not sound like sh!t, I happen to have quite a few things under the hood...namely 2 turbos, and in no way do I consider myself rice. Don't use derogatory terms to categorize a car simply by where it was manufactured...it makes you appear ignorant.

one last thing, why are ricers ashamed to have ricers, i am not ashamed to have a muscle car, ricers are ashamed that they ahve ricers but thats what they choose to have i dont get it, and if they are not ashamed to have ricers they certainly act like it

ill drive rice... ill drive classic...but if i drove rice i would put bodykits and neons and all that "great" stuff on it and if i drove muscel i wouldnt think i was the S*** because i have a V8 and tons of torque bot not much HP. there is a difference between a true ricer and rice driven by a rice boy. tru ricer. 550HP RX-7. thats over 400hp per litre. true ricer is a supercharged S2000 running in the 11's and also handles great as an autocrosser. tru ricer is like hyde. or the old Z wich indeffanitly beat an LS-1. people who drive ricers arent ashamed. anyone in here drive an asian import and is ashamed (kia not included) speak up.

Anything that is fast is called fast. It can be a fire breathing rotary gas drinking v8 or a high reving 4cyl. I'll use examples... I've built a few 600 hp stock car v8s they're fast to say the least, 4cyl mini stock race car engines that run 1 tenth a sec slower on 14 inch tires then some late model stock cars running on 15 inch tires, if the track would allow the mini stock cars to run 15 inch tires they could make faster laps then the late model stock cars and the late model guys don't want that happening. Now comes to the part where theres not pistons, the rotory world is a mix of high reving high output engines that literaly shoot flames. A ricer isn't a car thats less then 8 cyl is someone who thinks that they're fast when they're not(v8s, 6cyl,4cyl, and rotorys included). If you think that the only way to go fast is to have a v8 then you should take the time to look at power to weight ratiosand gear ratios. You think that I don't know what I'm talking about? Well I use to drive a 77 z28 camaro that was far from stock I have no idea what had been modded but it would stand out in a crowd of stock v8s, I own a supercharged v6 cougar ( the land yachet) that has beat on several differnt occasions a friend of mines vette, and I also have a 87 rx7 that sounds like an evil beast. It has a lope in the idle that sounds as if it's been ported I have no idea if it has or not because it has always sounded this way and it sounds nothing like many second gen n/a rx7s I've seen. It's strange because it pulls harder in the low rpm range then my sc cougar does and it makes the windows sound like they're going to break when I launch. I can go on and on about fast cars that are either v8, v6, straight 6, inline 4, flat 4, and rotory powered. This just goes to show that you dont need more cyls to make power. And just because a car doesn't have a v8 in it doesn't make it a ricer. Would you call a turbo buick a ricer, a v10 viper a ricer, how about a v 12 meclern (spelled wrong possibly) a ricer even though some came with huge wings on the back?

one: i am going to have to agree with fc driver, i myself am a late model driver( i know most of you dont know what that is, and i dont feel like explaining it) ok lets see here i never said ricer was better than muscle or vice versa
my defintion of a ricer is someone who thinks that they have a fast car and they dont, which is aka: mr dodge stealth

If he has a RT/TT it is indeed a fast car, and commands a hefty sticker price new. granted it's not the fastest car but still a car capable of running in the 12's with very little work done to it should certainly be given another look, and i refer to 3/s's as Sport luxury cars, and I would refer to you, as a ricer, read up on shit before you go talking out your ass k?

I currently drive a 94 Accord EX as a daily since i wrecked my T-Type, and i am in no way ashamed of driving this car, it's extremely slow to. And this coming from someone who loves Buick's.
You like making yourself out to be a dick dont you Throttle. Because the mojority of the posts you have on this forum are either insults to others cars or you just plain being a dickhead, i'm surprised the mods have let you hang around this long.

Wow, this is what happens when I'm away for a few days?
Ok, lets do some Automotive Math.
My car:
1972 Datsun 240z
Stock weight: 2300lbs
Modified weight: About 2100lbs with my 120lbs ass in it. (I'm a small guy :p)
I lost about 200lbs off the car by going with the SR20DET seeing as it's an all aluminum motor as opposed to my iron block/aluminum head Inline 6 L24 (Motor and Transmission, ECU, All wiring and all accessories only weighed 400lbs on the palet when it was delivered). I've also taken out the heater/fans and heater core, full size spare tire, all the spare tire jacks (I had two of them in the car, not sure why), stripped the rear interior. All that alone was about 50lbs. Removing the Fan, A/C Pump, Power Steering Pump and smog devices off of the SR20 lost me another 40lbs.
That's an approximate weight loss of 290lbs.
Still with me? The SR20 makes 205hp stock @ 7psi. I've got after market intake manifold, exhaust manifold, full 3" exhaust from the turbo back, Front mount intercooler, Electronic boost controller, electric fan, overly large radiator.
These motors are known to make 230-250 rear wheel horsepower on max boost, 15psi. With bolt ons. Which I have, And soon I'll be adding in a better clutch that actually grips and a lightweight flywheel.
Ok, you're still paying attention right?
We'll be pestimistic with the power gains, and just say it's 230whp. Add 18% for drivetrain loss (again being pestimistic).
230 + 18% = 271.4 net horsepower
Ok, so now we've established my 2100lb 240z. Has 271 horsepower at the crank.
Moving on.
2003 Cheverolet Corvette Z06
Stock Weight: 3200lbs
Stock Power: 405 horsepower
Average 1/4 time: Mid 12s... let's 12.6
Z06 power to weight ratio: 3200 \ 405 = 7.9:1
240z power to weight ratio: 2100 \ 270 = 7.7:1
Let's not forget that my 2100lbs is my race weight. Haven't even added in the weight of a driver for the Corvette.
Ok, I'm having fun... how about you? Raise your hand! w00t! Awesome.
Each month, the first saturday to be exact, we have a car meet at a local Pizza place. Consists mostly of Z's, but anything is welcome.
My buddy Terry's 240z with a 400ci Chevy Small block ran a 11.5 (spinning the first 100ft) in the 1/4 with Slicks, Open headers, and race gas. For the meet he was just running race gas. He said the car feels slower with full exhaust (which is obvious) and said it probably slowed him down .3-.4 tenths of a second. Which would put him at 11.8-11.9 seconds.
But we'll just say in street trim he's 12.5. We raced that night, and by 3rd gear I was slowly inching ahead. 4th gear I was ahead half a car and we shut down at about 110mph. The distance from which we raced was easily 1/4.. and it was slighlty up hill. And with my slipping clutch.
Thus... In closing.
I BEAT A SS CAMARO . Big Fucking Deal.
