shifter is messed up

hey guys. in my car, the shifter is meessing up on me. its a auto. when i go and put it into drive, it sometimes (most of the time) gets stuck between gears. so what i have to do is put it in between drive and 2nd how do i go about fixing that, its a 2000 mustang. has anyone had that problem b4?

sounds like a stuck or misadjusted linkage to me. i could also be the shift valve inside the valvebody, but i doubt it. get a chilton's or hayne's manual and do the procedure for adjusting it, or simply look for an obvious problem

i beleive its the linkage. it may need to be tightened up. last night i was out somewhere and i went to back up, i have to put it between R and N. how do you tighten the linkage up?

nuts and bolts under the car. you'll have a hell of a time getting at the ones on the base of the shifter with the trans installed. you can unmount the trans (2 bolts and a floor jack), lower it a few inches, and gain access. at the worst you'd have to unbolt your h-pipe from your headers.

that sounds like a pain in the ass. i dontw ant to do that. i may have to live with it, whats the worst that can happen if i leave it that way it is?
