for one, the oil pumps and pans are different, and if I'm not mistaken 93 is the year the 6G72TT was switched over from a 2-bolt to a 4-bolt main... hence why the pumps are different. Mitsubishi had a problem with the relief valve getting stuck in the old oil pump design, so they revised it. Problem is if you have a 91 or 92 even brand new replacement pumps are still the old design.

Had I known this when it came time to rebuild, I would have done a 4-bolt TT swap and not a rebuild of my original motor.

yea, but he said SL, and since all N/A's have 2 bolts, the motors are exactly the same. I dont know about the tranny's, if there was a 18 spline to 25 spline change in the front axles, or if that was just on the output shaft of the AWD tranny.

doh totally missed that, my bad

you're correct all NA's are 2-bolt, but NA oil pumps and pans were also changed between those years as well, (it was a common problem across all makes and models from the SOHC's to the TT's) because I can't use a 93+ oil pump on my 92 Stealth ES (tried already)

the motors are not exactly the same either, I believe between 92 and 93 is when Mitsubishi switched from a cast crank over to a forged crank as well, but you sure as hell cannot put a 93 pan or pump on a 92, the bolt patterns and fitment is different. Also I believe there are additional sensors on the 93 engine the 91-92 didn't have, like the CAS revision

I have no clue if there were tranny revisions, but if there is a difference this would be the first I've heard of it as many have dropped a 96+ FWD 5-speed in their older first gens without incident... but it could have been something they didn't think was post worthy either

Also the rear rotors for NA's were changed (enlarged) in 92.5+, I found this out the hard way as well when I got my pads from AutoZone, unless they made a mistake, because they carry two different size pads for DOHC FWD NA's, 1 set is 91-92.5, the other 92.5+. Although I have again a Stealth ES so maybe SL's aren't this way.

yea your right, i forgot about the internal changes, whenever they decided to switch motors in the middle of 92, so the newer 92s and 93s have the forged crankshaft and forged rods and the early 92s have the cast crankshaft and cast rods

http://www.stealth316.com/2-oilpan.htm

This is all I could find, and it doesn't mention a difference at all, so I really have no idea.
I guess if they changed it was probably 92.5 but that is only an assumption. And there are no stupid questions, that's how we all learn.

1992 Mitsubishi 3000GT: Except for three new paint colors, nothing changed for '92 in Mitsubishi's sport-coupe group.
1993 Mitsubishi 3000GT: Standard leather upholstery went into the VR-4 for '93, and the base coupe added some comfort features. Chrome-plated alloy wheels were offered for the first time, as was a CD changer.

1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT: Dual airbags were installed in 1994, as the Mitsubishi sports coupes got a modest facelift. The VR-4's engine got a boost to 320 horsepower, along with a switch from 5-speed manual shift to a 6-speed. All models wore a reshaped nose with four exposed headlamps, which replaced hidden flip-up units.

1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT: Costly retractable-hardtop Spyders debuted in spring 1995. The top was an articulated design, made of plastic composites, and production was very limited.

1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT: Few changes marked the coupes or the Spyders for '96.

1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT: Dodge Stealths dropped out of the market after 1996, but the Mitsubishi 3000GT carried on with minor styling touch-ups. A lower-priced base coupe joined the 3000GT lineup, carrying a single cam Mitsubishi-built 3.0-liter V6 that produced 161 horsepower. The dual-cam engine in the SL lost four horsepower.

1998 Mitsubishi 3000GT: 3000GT sees no change for 1998.

1999 Mitsubishi 3000GT: 3000GT received cosmetic changes front and rear and VR-4 models got a huge rear spoiler. Slow sales would eventually kill the Mitsubishi sports car for the year 2000.
