I've got a 1992 Full Size Blazer --
While I have the gas tank off and fuel pump out, I was wondering if there was any way to relocate the fuel pump & sending unit. In other words, switch it from an in-tank location to somewhere else (like the Engine compartment or frame rail)?
Anyone know of a way to do this?

As far as the sending unit goes, how could you relocate it to measure the level of fuel in the tank when the float has to FLOAT in the fuel?
As far as the pump goes, yes, you could modify the pickup tube to bypass the pump to the sock. You would then need to mount an electric pump between the tank and filter. There are many pumps available but be sure to get one that matches the pressure you need or purchase a pump that has a variable output pressure and adjust it accordingly.

Yip, he has a point.
Sending unit is used for measuring the fuel level.

Thanks for the help gents and my apologies for the late reply. I'm one of the fortunate folks in FL who has been without power since Sunday due to hurricane Jeanne.
Good point on the sending unit. Just wasn't thinking. Instead of doing all kinds of modifications to the unit, I think I'll just leave it where it is. Probably better in the long run should repairs need to be made in the future. However, I still do not have a running vehicle. Let mw give you a brief description of what the problem is and what I've done to try and fix it.
When I step on the gas while idleing, the vehicle hesitates for a couple seconds and then revs. When cold, the RPM bounce from 500 to 1000, until warm where it will idle naturally. When I put the vehicle in drive, it becomes vitually undrivable. Once I press the gas, it takes about 5-10 seconds for it to start to move. It doesn't make any wierd noises, just acts like it's not getting any gas. Once I can get it up to about 3000 RPMs it runs pretty well, but definitely not like it should.
I've only owned the vehicle for about 4-5 months. It has 115k on it. Since I've owned it, I've had to replace the transmission. Since this problem started occurring, in reading through this board, and goign to local parts stores, I've had the EGR valve checked (ok), and installed new spark plug wires, battery, fuel filter and throttle body sensor. That did not fix the problem.
Took it to the Chevy dealer who replaced the PCM, O2 sensor and Ground engine straps. Still no luck. They charged me $700 for this. They wanted to charge me an additional $700 to replace the fuel pump and sending unit. I took the truck home, took the fuel tank off and fuel pump out, hooked it directly to the battery, and it worked fine. At this point I'm stuck.
Any ideas????
Thanks in advance for your help.

Here a few things to check:
1. Check your fuel pressures at the schrader, if there OK,
2. Poor idle can be from the EGR but you did check it, try the IAC, remove and clean.
3. A good throttle body cleaning wouldn't hurt.
4. Have it scanned and review the data before swapping out sensors.

Thanks for the good input Mikado. I've decided to have it towed to the mechanic tomorrow, but I'll make sure he checks what you've specified and be sure to let you know how it turns out.
Unfortunately, with my job, it doesn't leave me much free time to mess with it.
Thanks again for the help. I'll be back when it's running right, looking for performance tips.

Before you have it taken anywhere, remove the EGR valve and check for carbon keeping the valve open.
This is common.
why are you taking it into the mechanic for? Why aren't you trying to fix it yourself?

Because in his post he said he didn't have the free time due to his job.
Anyway, he will have it repaired and be able to enjoy driving his truck.

Well, my power came back on today, and I've rented a car for the week. Oh joyous days!! I'd like to try and dig into this thing over the weekend. If for nothing else, to learn something....
Tonight I put the fuel pump back in and the tank back on. I'm going to run to the parts store, pick up a new EGR (just to see if that really is the problem), new IAC and then run to the gas station to get gas to put back in the tank.
I'm not sure how to check the fuel pressure at the schrader Mikado. Can you explain that a bit??
Once I do the above, I'll check back in!
Thanks again for the help!!!

Well, I took my EGR off and brought it to a different shop. Same reply. Good to go.
I replaced the IAC, and no difference. Could it be the exhaust??

Ok, what I am about to say doesn't mean it is bad, it should be scanned when cold and continue scanning until the engine gets to temp. The sensor in mind would be the temp sensor. Not the one for the guage, the one the computer uses. It is located on the right side (passenger) below the exhaust manifold. It senses the engine temp for the computer to adjust the dwell time of the injectors from a cold start to a warm or normal condition.
If all the other things you have done are good, that would be one of the things I would check. But again, it would be with a scanner to see the changes that are occuring to the sensor.
If you don't mind spending the $20 - $25 bucks for the sender then that is your choice. I don't like or prefer not to shotgun.
In any envent, Good Luck! I know you will prevail.

Ok, stop aimlessly throwing parts at it and have a shop look at it.
It will cost you more for you to keep throwing random parts until it fixes it than having someone hook it up to a scanner and monitor the codes and sensors for the problem.

Well gents, after all that, it was the fuel pump. Even though it "worked", I guess it was fading fast. Got it replaced to today, and the good news is with that and all the other things I did in the process, the truck runs better than it ever has.
Thanks again for the help!
