ported vs. sealed

okay, for my whole life ive been told that ported boxes are better than sealed, is this true? if it is then why?

They each have their pros and cons. But GENERALLY, if you have the ability to build a proper ported box, it'll kick ass. It also depends on your subs, wants, trunk space, setup, and application. I'm sure you can find the pros and cons of both somewhere in this site.

is it that hard to make a ported box? i thought all you had to do was make it bigger and drill a big whole in it.

its not hard to make the box...its hard to tune it corectly with minimal port noise...hand over hand a properly built ported enclosure is louder and nearly as crisp as sealed...The loudest enclosure i personally ever seen was a properly built transmission line enclosure...but transmission line enclosures take profestional cabnetry building skills and really really knowing what the hell your doing...they tune to a frequincy just like a ported bux but see an aveage of 5dB gain in somecases where as ported isa 3dB gain...

so if im making a box to fit in the rear fender and i dont have alot of space it will be better in my case to make a sealed box?

ya probably unless your sub is like an 8 or something..probably not enough space for anything but a sealed box...may even ave to put the sub in with the magnet facing out to conserve space...

im not that hard pressed for space, i have a 240 fastback so i can make it as big as needed really. the biggest thing im worred about is can you still get short of breath with a sealed box?

explain "short of breath?"

when the bass hits so hard your teeth raddle and you can barley talk, you may also find it hard to breath, the only car i have had this in is my friends blazer and he has a ported box with 2 jl w7's

you can with enough power...just remember that in order for a sealed box to have the same output as a ported box it has to have twice the power...what size and brand and modle woofers are you looking at here?

diamond audio 10" maybe 12" 1500 watts (rms) each, i think they shoud be good.

how many though? just one? that wont cause "short of breath" but will loud enough as long as you dont go wit a higher quality componet set which would over play your bass... 2 in a larger ported enclosure with 1500RMS will probably hit into the 130-low 140's...which is painfully loud without hearing protection but ive seen louder with one woofer.... im not completely familure with dimand audio so dont hold me to anything i just said... ;-)

90dB each? do you mean 90dB sensitivity? with a 1500w RMS rating a 90dB sensitivity is very unlikely...

I can list several 90dB subs off the top of my head that can handle 1500+ rms

not from companies like dimond audio....

diamond audio makes some good stuff IMO

its good stuff...but they over rate just like 99% of all other publicly owned companies....
