I went to check the condition of the distributor cap and rotor. My car doesn't have one. It uses an ignition control module to fire the plugs. Can anyone explain how this system works?

you have an ignition coil and a coil pack, each cylinder has a plug into the coil pack and the ECU also plugs into the coil pack and coil. The ECU tells the coil and pack when to fire and to which wire to send the spark.

can I then assume that the system is solid state and needs no periodic maintenance?

ya, the only thing you might want to do is check the connections on the coilpack at 100k when you change your plugs.

haven't seen this type of ignition system, but read about it...wondering is it better than the traditional setup.
but it's nice though, don't have to change the cap
