'89 Voyager SE - runs ragged when starting

When starting my Voyager, engine "sputters" and sometimes dies out shortly thereafter. Then the "Check Gages" light comes on in the panel, but the gages seem fine.

Weird thing is, I can actually drive it if it starts without dying but acceleration is all messed up - seems to be no power when pressing the gas at first. Also, sometimes when stopping (at a light for example) the engine will die.

This kind of problem seems to happen off and on. Some days it will start and run just fine but lately it's been doing this.

If anyone here has any guesses as to what's wrong, I would appreciate the insight.

You should get the diagnostic codes from the computer. Sounds like a sensor has done bad.

Chysler computer codes (80-95 Chysler's):

Chysler faults codes are stored in the computer for up to 50 ignition starts. Each code is two digits.
The code's meaning (i.e. faulty sensor) can be found by doing a web search using keywords
"Chryler computer codes".

To obtain codes: Turning the ignition key on-off-on three times (don't start the engine) will put the
computer into diagnostic mode. Watch the "check engine" light. Count the flashes for each digit which is followed by a pause between digits. Two digits to a code with the end of the list being code 55.

To reset the codes, turn the ignition key on-off-on
50-55 times (don't start the engine).

I will definitely look into that. Thanks for the heads-up regarding Chrysler codes as I didn't know about them yet!
