I have a 2001 avalier 2.2. Please help me someone. Is there a way to test your ECM while still in the car. I dont have the money to take it in somewhere. I am having a nightmare electrical problem in it and if its bad its till under a Federal Mandated Warranty. Thank you.

My check engine lights come on for about 6 months and I keep turning it off.But after taking to to a shop for a different problem they showed the TPS was bad so he shut off the code and my odemeter light shut off.I havent been able to read the odemeter for the last few months along with a few lights going off in the dash. All this happened at the saame time except the TPS. Its actually hard to explain but when I shut off the code the last time my check engine light came on all my guages stopped working and all my other warning lights came on even after the car was started. I had to unplug the battery for awhile to reset the dash but the dash lights are still out. So my confusing question is,does this sound like a ECM to anyone?. Oh yeah the check engine light code is PO440 which is a Evap Emmisions Control Malfunction. I am hopeing its the ECM because it is covered under warranty. Thank you. twstr988@aol.com

sounds like possibly a bad body control module. The BCM controls many dash readouts, and when they go bad, they can cause many dash gremlins like you describe.

there's really no way for a do-it-yourselfer to test a BCM. It is located in the kick panel just forward of the drivers side door.

I heard from someone to take it to Auto Zone to have them test the electrical system for free which I knew about but will it tell me really whats wrong with the car such as if the ECM or BCM are bad?...Just wondering...Thanks...

The most I knew autozone did was plug their code reader into the car and tell you what trouble codes came up.

Thats what I thought...I guess I would have to call them first...But would they still be able to pull up the old codes that have already been erased?...
